Out for the weekend in the Z little concerned about the temp gauge. It goes up to half way as normal then it’s all over the place drops down to just over the blue line then back up to half way. Is this something I need to worry about. ?

I'd be inclined to look into any concerns with the cooling system. Could be a sticky thermostat problem or maybe the coolant sensor. Both are low cost (under a tenner) and easy to replace

If the constant changing showing on the temp gauge is rapid then It sounds more like an electrical fault ( ie bad connection) but if slower then sounds more like the thermostat sticking open

Slightly different but I had the same temp gauge issue on my Ford Galaxy. Water pump failed and lost the engine.

The temp gauge on the Z3 should sit pretty much bang in the middle, I would be looking at the thermostat if it were my car, the clips holding the thermostat are prone to breaking and this leads to the engine running cool.

Certainly get it checked, then you can find out how concerned you should be.....

Hello mate, got similar symptoms at minute; can take longer than normal to get up to temp/12 o'clock; heat from the vents sometimes feels feeble; can take ages to get back up to temp/12 o'clock if re-starting, even if after only a short time (i.e. minutes)

Other times it works perfectly normal with hot air merrily blasting out the vents. Anyway, connected INPA and had 40-odd instances of a 'thermostat KFK' error. So Wahler replacement stat and fan tools ordered and arriving next week, about sixty quids all in.

Water pump, fan and pulley were done in 2011 according to receipts, but car has done less than 20k since then so not inclined to change any of those bits. I'll change the coolant and plan on taking a look at the belts at some point today
