You can see on one of the images that the front bumper is completely smashed. There may be other damage behind it.

That's what I was thinking Ian, I can't imagine someone would down turn the chance to sell a car such as that in one piece for a good chunk of cash in order to wait to sell it piece meal. It doesn't take that much to right off one of these cars nowadays, just ask @hard top, his car was in excellent nick but not worth repairing.

And bear in mind even if it was a £10k car it's only going to be a £6k one as a repaired Cat.

Straightening the chassis could have been £1000 for starters.

Possibly. But the seller, whilst he sells good quality stuff is not cheap. He wants £1,150 for the engine. You could get a modest mileage one for half of that out of another BMW and only need to swap over the sump and pick-up pipe. That said you would be wise to pick up the ECU with the engine if it's for an upgrade.
