SEPERATE DRLs

Bought dash cam after talking to T Tony and Aceman,, fitted it with some success so decided some DRLs were next after seeing pic of T Tony's Z and liking the look, (even though I intended to get some new lights with halo's,) when it comes to electrics I would normally get the pro's in but decided after fitting the dash cam to get myself a new meter and have a go. Guess what? After two days of freezing my nuts off and removing grill and under tray four times I finally got the DRLs in the right location, all this done in -1 to +3 degrees on concrete outside my very narrow dark garage. Then waited a week before wiring up(which I was less than confident in tackling). For some unknown reason I couldn't find the wiring instructions so went on Internet to get some idea. Much help and no help,seems they could be wired two to three differant ways. One day this week was forecast +7to+8 so off I shot (long johns an all) to my personal patch of concrete, took my jump starter to wire up DRLs just to make sure they worked after all the relocating,and they did. So after forgetting my I pad to photo my progress I went back today with it to give you all some idea of my finished work.

Should have faced car into the sun to help ipad lens.
Wiring wasn't as difficult as I thought, took DRLS harness left up beside offside h/light following main harness using same clips plus cable ties to ECU box removed lid and found a nightmare of wires looking for ignition fed pos( red/white) for DRLS red main feed. As in pic.

Looking good Roy. Well done for persevering through to the end. Did you wire in the relay (switch) which cuts them out when you have your lights on? I haven't yet but it's on my list. Had yesterday and today off and got my rear wheels off and took them into work and had the tyres turned as the inner edges were showing a bit more wear. I have to confess I had my small gas heater going for an hour to take the chill off. Did you hard wire the camera or use the cig lighter socket?

Here's the pics,

Wire following main loom to ECU box where the black DRL wire (you can see) is connected to the earth bolt on strut housing, red then follows through grommets with main harness into the UCU box where I had to find ignition fed red/white to conect DRL red wire, as seen in following pics. Kept DRL fuse outside of box for quick access if needed to disconnect without disturbing ECU box seal. Last but not least is the connection to the dip beam in the offside h/light, three wires on this d/beem and I conected White DRL wire to the brown d/beem wire. All connections including plug and play were then re-sealed with waterproof wiring tape cos I didn't believe the manufactured connections would stay proofed for long, may be overkill but better safe than sorry.

Hi Tony, thanks for the comments and I'm ashamed to say I didn't hard wire the dash cam in at the time,but am gaining in confidence so will attempt it soon, have taken some pics today of it cos I just new you would ask. So I'll post now. You'll see I went for the double adapter which works for cam+Tom tom, allso gives me a batt condition indicator, one small part of wiring shows as you'll no doubt notice but will endeavour to hide.

This is what I used Roy, just cut the plug end off at the required length and found an ignition fed live at the radio plug (n/s of console), plugged camera plug into the socket (this is also the voltage reducer - down to 5V) wrapped some tape around it for security and housed it behind the glove compartment. Only took me 1/2 an hour. Then camera is automatically switched on and off with ignition. By the way, the company I work for have just completed camera installations in our fleet of vans.

Just the info I needed Tony cos I was contemplating going into the ignition switch wiring near the switch and wondering if there is enough room behind the panel where it's mounted already, but your way sounds better. By the way I've decided to mount rear view camcorder just under passenger chrome rollover bar on a Perspex wind deflector and will get back to you when it's done. Won't be untill the hard top comes off early spring cos not enough room to make good job with it on. Only prob I can see will be getting the wire through passenger side unseen, might have to lift some carpet etc.

You should be able to lift the kick panel off and run it along the edge of the carpet, if you feel it needs some protection, get some w/washer tube and split it down the side and wrap it around the cable(s).
