I have just been told about a Self Service garage in Bognor that has 5 car lifts, and each bay has a full toolkit to use.
Just take your car in and work on it yourself..
Dont know what the costs are, but definitely going to check it out tomorrow.

I still have the Diff and gearbox oils to change so putting the car up in the air will make it so much easier and safer.

Definitely puts a clutch replacement within the realms of possibility if and when the time comes.
 
Nice clean space with the five two post car lifts.
Seem to have all the normal garage tools plus a mechanic on hand if help needed
Normal price will be £20.00 per hour, but introductory offer at £15.00 per hour.
All day price £100.00. 9am - 6 pm

Think I’ll give it a go and get the oils changed.

If their ok with it I’ll get some pictures when I try it out.
 
i wish there was one in Basingstoke. would be so handy for those more awkward jobs

If it all went pear shaped then you can leave a vehicle over night but obviously at a cost.

I went round today and changed the diff and gearbox oils. No scrabbling around on the floor, good lighting and made me feel like a real mechanic. :whistle:
The guy set up the arms and showed me the workings of the lift. Then just let me get on with it.
Tool kit supplied was fairly comprehensive, and they do have more specialist tools if required.
There is also a mechanic who can do welding should you need it. They are also looking to do aircon re-gassing in the future.
So all in all not bad and only about 3 minutes from home

Took some time to look over all the underside as I had the opportunity, found one of the fuel lines had come out of a clip, ...pressure with one digit on my left hand and fixed it.:thumbsup:

I did find that the front exhaust bracket has rusted through and missing, and the exhaust is slightly twisted at the middle joint, so will get the bits I need and arrange another visit and get underneath again to sort it.

I was there for about an hour and a half this morning and got charged £20.00.
 
That is a cracking service.
 
And its going to cost £23.78 for a bent bit of tin :(:(:(:( Item 8

And I have just realised that the other half of the bracket ( item 7)has a welded stud not a screw, so if this shears off while undoing doing the rusty nut, I will have to get the top bracket as well. :banghead:
So back grovelling on the floor in the garage again tomorrow to see if it will undo.
Although...it may be better to see if I can get the two bolts (item 2 )undone, and remove the whole bracket then work on the bench, where I can heat it and spray it with WD40.

If it does shear and the bracket is good enough, I could grind off the old stud, drill it, as you said, and weld a bolt in.

There is room, so I could use a hex head bolt.
 
If you can remove the whole bracket, just put it in a vice and run a hacksaw down the side of the bolt then it will unscrew and clean the thread at the same time. And yes, you can replace it with a nut and bolt if you need to.

Back on the floor again.....ooh my knees!!! !

Jacked up one side this morning and took off the rear undertray. The two bolts (ref 2 above) are 4mm allen sockets and really difficult to get to. The gearbox support bracket is in the way. Tried to move them with an allen key but way too tight and didn’t want to damage them so undid the two bolts (ref 5) and loosen bolt ref 9 and the bracket came came out.

The welded stud of the top bracket was in a sorry state, but I did what @t-tony suggested and got the nut off but the thread of the stud was, to put it mildly, crap!!!
So cut it off, drilled it out and found an M8 bolt, washer and nut to replace it. I was thinking of welding it....but cant be arsed!
All the other fixings on the bracket cleaned up ok so can go back.

Cant do much now till Sunday, as cant pick up the new bracket until tomorrow am, and playing Walking Footy against AFC Sudbury in the afternoon. ( Bognor are playing AFC Sudbury in an FA Cup Qualifier and us old farts are playing their old farts before the main game on the training pitch)

So I have cleaned & painted the rust with a phosphate treatment, and will go and get some black high temp paint to cover it.

This would have been so much easier using a car lift :arghh:

Trouble is, if I do one job, and then find something else while doing it, I cant just leave it especially if its something I can do reasonably easily.
 
Picked up the bracket plus the 3 nylon nuts that hold the undershield up . They were not in the best of condition, due to being overtightened at some time.
One thing I did find this morning, the Halfords low profile trolley jack, has dropped over night. The car is on axle stands, but I had the trolley jack with some 4 x 2 under the sill, between the jacking points Not really taking any weight but just as a precaution. This morning there was a 1/2 inch gap between the wood and the sill, despite the release valve being tight. Not too impressed, but is this normal ?
