Seat Occupancy - Faulty Mat or sensor?

Hi,

I'm trying to clear an air-bag light on my 2001 Z3. Using a B800 diagnostic tool, I'm getting an error which translating the codes from the manual (Table 40 code 1A) is the "Seat Occupied Recognition 1 (SBE1)".

Does anyone have any experience as to whether this is likely to be the seat occupancy control box (under the seat) or the sensor mat (within the seat)? Is there a way of testing whether the mat is working?

Many thanks,

Paul

Not sure if this will help.

I changed the seats in my car earlier this year. (still need to put up more details and pictures).
The seats were from a Honda S2000 and did not have the occupancy sensor. Several people on here pointed me to the bypass items for sale on ebay. You disconnect the wiring to the seat and plug it in to fake the signal for the computer. If your mat is broken its the cheapest and easiest option.

Hi there folks, new to the forum here and the threads have been such a help as I attempt to get my zed 3 ready for mot.

I also have the issue with my airbag light. Code reader told me it was the passenger seat detector, so I ordered the bypass from ebay which arrived today, but it hasn't done the trick. After resetting the fault the airbag light turns off for about 10 seconds then returns with the same code fault.

Any ideas? Could it be the seat control module that is faulty?

Cheers

Hi all,
I have a 2000 year z3 2.0ltr 6 cylinder. My airbag light just came on. I have tried to order the bypass in the previous article but it says not for this vehicle? Any others available?

Have you tried resetting the airbag light?

I had a similar issue a coupla years back, bought the bypass, did nothing. Bought a 2nd hand control module, sorted the problem. In my case I believe the module got wet, so if you suspect the same for yours, you also may need a new module.

Bypassing the sensor makes the airbag deploy or not in case of an accident?

I've heard of the seat occupancy pad breaking with a sudden heavy weight being dropped on it - a big dog could that.

If you cover the coupla quid for the postage I can send you the bypass relay that I didn't end up using if you want it?

So has anyone got the contact details for where to buy a suitable by pass?
All the ones on ebay say not for Z3?

Thanks Dark but I had already ordered one and been away a few days.

Do you have to reset the light via the round socket under the bonnet rather than OBD socket by steering wheel?

The OBD under the dash ONLY connects to Engine and Automatic Gearbox ECUs. All others connect via the round connector under the bonnet in the engine bay.

Yes airbag module only works from the round 20pin socket in the engine bay.

Hi everybody. following on from the above I fitted the bypass and bought a B500 reset tool. the reader comes up with code 38 then 02. What is 02?

It seems the reader clears the code but it comes back with ignition on/off?
maybe duff bypass ?.....or any ideas?

Hi, when my airbag light comes on occasionally it's usually after the passenger seat has been adjusted. When I plug in my reader it shows the numbers 02 then 06. 02 is the table and 06 is the fault code - in my case, the passenger side seat belt tensioner.

If your B500 is similar to my B800 tool then the 38 is the table and the 02 is the fault. See the photo of my manual.
