been fiddling with my screen washers and I think I've made them worse, just under the jets there's a little white round thing that looks like a filter there is a little hole in the intake end and water is pouring out of that one! What's it all about?

Time to get a new one, mine went, apparently there's a little valve in it to prevent water syphoning back to the tank.

Its a non return valve Hugh, you can just remove it but it will take a little more time to get water to the screen. A replacement cost a few pounds if you want to keep it stock.

I have just bought and fitted a new non-return valve to the driver's side of mine, and it is actually worse. The drivers' side was poor flow and I recall having this before and curing it with a new valve. Not this time though. Removing the valve 'fixes' it but at the cost of a long wait for water and no flow on the passenger's side. I assume that there's a semi-blockage in the pump reducing the available flow rate/pressure.

The blockage is more likely to be in the washer bottle itself. Where the pump fits into the bottom of the bottle there should be a fine filter which gets blocked easily and this starves the pump of water to send up to the screen.

Agree with Tony and a few blasts of low pressure air will loosen it up but you'll need to pull the washer container to get all the crap out of it. Also a good time to check that screen for damage that will allow small particles into your jets and plug them solid. JIM

I changed mine when i had the Z3 and it took ages to get them working correctly again i found a lot of it was just the position the filter sat at. If you open the Bonnet you will probably find they spray ok but when the Bonnet is closed they do not work if that is the case just keep adjusting the pipe so it starts to work once that happens then they usually work as normal

That's more or less what is happening billz. I'll have a go at it as soon as I can. Thanks, All, for the information. :)

Whilst the non return valve may have had it and you may have a blocked pipe when i checked my washer bottle it was that full of crap i replaced the pump removed the bottle and cleaned well.
So much better now

Mine is always filled with demineralised water from the kitchen filter jug's initial 2l of throw-away water after a filter change. My tin-top (X-Type) has HID lights with a high pressure washing system that clogs easily with mineral deposits so that must have demin water. It's become a habit to use it for both.

I use the water from the water butt for washer bottles and general cleaning especially because we are on a water meter and also we are in a hard water area ;)

Also it's a good idea to let your bottle empty every so often, the put in the garden hose and overflow it for a couple of minutes to swill it out. IF you ever get the horrid stink from your w/washers try Milton baby bottle steriliser to clean it out.

I think I'd try the Milton's first. Some of the ones I see at work would turn your stomach mate.:(

I have now washed away all the snot and slime from the filter and it squirts over the roof again like and excitable schoolboy!

I just put Dutch washer stuff in mine, @Mint will vouch for me and it said on the packaging that it's loads better than it is in the UK so there!! =))
