I just ordered the NT530, and it will be here this weekend. It's my last resort for a scanner. If it doesn't work, I'll either dive into INPA or just take it to a local specialist for this diagnosis.

Don't try to auto scan for the VIN. That function is for the modern cars. Manually select your car.

Got the NT530 today. Here's the results. As advised, I manually selected the model instead of running the auto VIN detector. Same as the NT510 in that the closest Z3 roadster/M52 choice available is 3/98 whereas mine is a build date of 12/97. Ran the auto scan. Where the NT510 kept getting stuck, the NT530 runs through and completes the scan. Pulls up a bunch of fault codes under the ZKE central body module that didn't show up before; still nothing related to the ASC. I cleared the codes. Scanned again and get the same results. As far as lights on my dash, the ASC is the only one staying on, and that's what I was hoping to get an answer for with this scanner. I didn't seem to accomplish anything. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can explain this.

I'm surprised that it does not cover your build date.

Your car has a bit of ODB1/ADS, being your ABS module and ODB2 modules. The build date that can be selected on the scanner is only for ODB2 module cars.

Maybe time to try something different. Select a Z3 with a M44 engine and a very early build date to try and force the use of ODB1/ADS. The hope here is that the scanner will ignore the modules is can't find for the engine and read the ABS module for you.

If that does not work, then try selecting an E30. They are all ODB1/ADS and see if that works.

I tried multiple selections. No communication with ABS/ASC module whatsoever. Is there anything simple to check that would keep the module from communicating other than the module itself?

I might have just stumbled onto something. I pulled the glove box to visually inspect for anything obvious going to the module. I don't know all the history of this car, but it appears the module has already been replaced. It looks like salvage yard markings on it. I've read that these have to be coded with the car in order to work. If so, how is that done? Your thoughts on my discovery?

If the replacement module was never coded, would that keep a scan tool from reading it completely, or am I still dealing with another issue? Where does the module actually get it's power from? Is there a fuse or something that would keep it from getting any power at all?

Hi

1) I looked up where the ABS unit in your car is used in RealOEM and its used in all the E36 cars. So try selecting an early E36 car and see if it communicates. I checked out my NT530 and there is a date that separates the ODB1 and ODB2 cars. The older date lets you select the module you want to talk to. The newer date asks for the car model. Try both.

2) Yes a replacement module needs to be coded to the car. Attached is my notes on ABS unit repair/replacements for ODB2 cars. The coding instructions at the back will be the same for your car. I suspect that you will have the same issue of having to find an old computer with a com port to be able to talk to the module with NCSexpert to code it. When I replace the ABS module on my car, I could talk to the module with my scanner and NCSexpert before it was correctly coded to the car.

3) Also attached is the electrical wiring diagrams for your car (production date 12/97). You can easily look up the fuses that control the ABS module.

Hope this is helpful.

Murray

My worry is some of these couriers just ''chuck 'n run'' and sign for it themselves - then they claim you must have had it.
