Saving fuel

The fact remains that Johnson told the nation not to panic buy pre-media coverage. The government has worked throughout the last 18 months at least with behavioural scientists. He knew that by telling the nation not to panic buy, the nation would panic buy.

See, classic case - Emergency services have their own dedicated supply, to make sure this doesnt happen. If they dont have a tank on site they have a local dedicated petrol station contracted to supply them, who may sell to Joe public ( often at higher prices ;) ) but will not not be able to supply the emergency services when required.
How do you know this?

“If they dont have a tank on site they have a local dedicated petrol station contracted to supply them, who may sell to Joe public…” and perhaps such a photo was taken at such a petrol station 🤦🏻‍♀️

How do you know this?

I probably read it somewwhere on a news site ;) But do know our local petrol station that did supply them, his prices were always 10- 15p per litre more, and folks wondered how he stayed in business.

BP site posted on Friday with regards to their shortages -
www.bp.com/en_gb/united-kingdom/home/news/press-releases/bp-statement-on-current-fuel-situation.html

Given how the Gov. would be expected to respond to this in some way, what would you like them to say ? Either dont panic theres no shortage, or guys we got a fuel shortage coming, go fill up ASAP ?
The clown isnt the best we could have, but hands tied really - he could of course probably put it in a better way.
Again more to the media, and how folks reacted to the information given.

If you want to see how folks can be influenced, watch ' The Social Dilemma ' its on netflix and availalbe free on youtube - quite an eye opener.

Perhaps Government should have done pre-panic buying what they are paid to do: govern.

What is there to say,

Tony.

The emergency services have there own fuel supplies. How do I know? I worked for them for 30 years.

Also fuel stations never totally run out, they are required to keep a percentage in their tanks because an empty tank is more of an explosion risk.

During the lorry driver blockades and real fuel shortage of 2000, the emergency services restricted driving to essential mileage only in places rather than general patrols but there was never an issue with supply and local agreements with local fuel stations meant that the staff never went without and could get to work.

Damn. Do you mean he was right all along? That's a disappointment.

Nonsense as in the ensuing panic buying that Johnson’s statement has created.
And who reported Johnson's statement? Or was it the millions who were present to personally hear his speech that rushed out to the nearest petrol station shouting out to everyone they met that there was a fuel shortage?

The media love the dramatic headlines which then causes the ensuing panic, which the media then report again and so it continues!

:oops:Just to say.Friday last , knew that I was going for staycation in East Kent. Live in North Somerset. Had to go to nearest BMW dealer in Cribbs Causeway. Driving home across Bristol as M5 is a nightmare going south after 08:30 on Friday. Went to a local Tesco in Nailsea, town about 4 miles from home and there was a small queue waited 20 mins to top off tank. M25 Saturday no fuel from Cobham to Maidstone services The local BP where I am does not know when it will get fuel again. Staycation is ok as DS3 will do about 690 miles on a tank of fuel. Daughter works in local BP at home. Told me they had people phoning from as far away as Taunton on Sunday. Sold out of fuel by 2:00 pm Sunday afternoon. Sold 3x more than usual. So .. there is no fuel shortage, just none at the pumps.. so therefore there is a fuel shortage. To exasperate this the Sunday time business pages are running a story that Stanlow refinery is in their words ‘teetering on the edge of collapse’ and is supplies a sixth of Britain’s road fuel. You could not make it up. I am know looking forward to working from home until Christmas, probably. Then there will be another Christmas miracle and the fuel will stay to clean again. Crisis what crisis. Still slightly worried about getting home though...

Oh have also learn’t that the company providing energy has gone into liquidation fFor those of a certain age you may remember the song ‘Three wheels on my wagon, but I’m still rolling along’ 🤣 lol

The Stanlow problem isnt new, they were having problems back in April.
Basically due to low fuel sales last year they are sruggling to meet HMRC payments - so should the Gov. give them dispensation and extend their payment window - a special case or not. When they would let other businesses fold ?

If we doubled or even trebled the number of drivers there still wouldn't be enough during the panic we're currently experiencing. Number of available trucks. Size of tanks in the gas statiions etc.

And once everyone is done panicking all those extra drivers will be sat round on their ar*es with nothing to do. They'll still want paying so that money has to come from somewhere.

So. Right. Let's hire more drivers. But don't whinge when the cost of fuel goes up just to pay for all those drivers sat doing nothing except waiting for the next panic.
