Nice to know TomTom have started doing the ITN Satnavs. i went to over to the Garmin about 4 years ago because when i contacted TomTom they told me they had to drop ITN Planning as there was not enough memory to do everything. Might just have to buy a new one.

Have you tried any of the phone apps? I’ve been using navmii for the iPhone but works on Android to. Your able to program routes in and has upto date maps, speed warnings but have to pay extra if you want speed cameras though. Good product for free apart from buying a magnetic holder to mount sham it does not support itn files but a good suggestion to make to the developers.

What bracket are you using to mount the phone in the car ?

We're got the Garmins :p
Our son has the new updated one and he says it is really good :p
Ours we're had a few years now and it doesn't seam to tell you fast enough what route to take and Alan said next time he's getting a Tom Tom :)
But personally they both do the same job and both have got life time updates :)

I have a low end Tom Tom, super cheap (on special at Halfords for £70), but with maps for Europe. Have used it all round the UK and France. Can't fault it, very impressive actually. As an aside, was recently in Barcelona and stayed with a friend who had a solid Mercedes B class - even though the Merc had a built-in satnav he had his phone on the dash to use Google Maps because the built-in satnav was crap. It's not like Barcelona is a tricky city either. Goes to show that built-in satnavs often aren't the answer either.

Gone for TomTom Start 52. Dont need all the bells and whistles.

Now, best way to mount it ?

Mine sits on the dashtop - close to hand for adjusting and cables etc.
That’s a magnetic mount from Amazon. Nice and sturdy.
The device bottom edge also rests on the dash so it doesn’t shake about on bumpy roads

I use one of these Best Car Phone Holder 100% Universal Magnetic Dashboard Mount Kit by Wuteku® | For All Vehicles, Phones & Tablets | iPhone 7 6 6S SE 5 5S 5C Galaxy https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T0I54Q8?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf with my iPhone there are other types out there. Don’t know why it’s listed in $ but is currently £14.99 on Amazon prime.

I have a Tom Tom Goose neck, nice and bendy, hoping it will sit nice just above the headlight button.

I paid the extra to get the live traffic management (built in SIM) ~ it worked for a while, then stopped after a firmware upgrade
I've reset the TT numerous times - there is at least 3 different types of reset with little to no success
I've also contacted TT twice and I think the next step is to return it

As for the device itself I'd be lost without it ;)

Note - I've had TT since about 2002, when it used to run on a HP palm computer and external aerial/receiver

I just finished the installation of a Garmin DriveSmart 50 WE LMT-D today. It is fitted to the centre console with Brodit brackets so no drilling is required. And it is wired to the radio fuse so it powers up in ignition key 1.

It has bluetooth hands-free telepone (required by law in Sweden) and receives text messages. It can also be connected to Garmin wireless backup camera.

I have a Garmin Camper 660LMT with a 6" screen in my Land Rover Defender. This one is connected to a backup camera but I do not think this necessary in the Z3.

Also i my sailboat I have a Garmin plotter and a Garmin hand-held gps as a back-up.

In case you are interested, I can take a picture of the gps installation tomorrow.

Two tom-toms for me, 720 GO now Ten yrs old, and new cheaper one Go? £80. Here's my 720 mounted on a Halfords disc which sticks with 3m onto dashboard, notice the sun shield (same age) which actually expands to fit my new wider cheap version. 720 battery failed last year whilst on holiday so bought the newer one, didn't like the graphics on this one so changed 720 batt with the help of my faithful 1/2inch wood chisel. Saved me sending it to manufacturers.

Not saying tom-tom is the best but it's hard to change a ten year habit.:bag:

I have 2 top of the range Garmins, had TomTom before these but stopped buying them when they dropped the ITN Planning. I have one in works car and one in Kuga. Just ordered the TomTom go520 now that i have found that they have started with the ITN Planning again as i think TomTom are much better at reporting traffic and speed cameras

It seem the company in the link will not ship to the UK , but did find them on UK site.

As I read this , you need to use adhesive to fix a plate onto the car , then fix the phone holder onto the steel plate when required.

If I am correct does this mean you are left with the plate stuck on the car if you sell it on, as future owner may not be keen on having it on the dash.

The mount sticks onto the dash and you stick a slim disk onto your phone case. Does not bother me the disk on my case.
