#ZedShed Rosie the Turkish Green 2.8 Z3

Been a cracking couple of days in the shed. Lots of progress and photos to share.

First up was assembling the swing arms, we had to buy another pair of arms due to the holes in the original set after grit blasting they were just too thin to use safely. Meyle bearings fitted.

Then new backing plates with hand brake mech and new handbrake cables.

we also had a celebrity Z4M sneak in today for an exhaust adjustment. Cracking contrast of colours between the two.

We gave the diff a good coat of silver hammerite.

the parts all starting to come together ready for assembly.

New beam bushes in place. The key thing that makes all these Z3’s handle as they should.

then last use of the heavy tooling pressing in the hubs. Took a photo mid assembly showing the tooling used.

we also quickly took the diff cover off to press in the new diff bush.

then the final bits on the arms. New Brembo discs and freshly powder coated brake carriers.

Other side.

while that was finished we went back up front to fit the freshly coated subframe along with new engine mounts. These are becoming more important. Here you can see how they really squash down over time. New next to old

Subframe installed. Then final assembly.

shiny bits, come up well after 25 years.

We also cleaned up the under side removing the rust and sealing it all in again ready for the road.

Area of concern actually cleaned up really well.

not too much left to do now. Waiting on the wheels to be repainted. Also the suspension is yet to arrive. We have a little bit of welding to do, where the car was so low it was catching in the same point allowing it to rust right at a drain hole under the drivers seat. Luckily it will be straight forward cut out a square and replace.

very nearly there mechanically :D

Looking good

Everything seems to be coming together. We always end up waiting for something and this time it’s suspension.

The subframe is back in!!

Think I’ve got a coupe itch

Still waiting for suspension to arrive so we’ve stalled a little. We did manage to get some of the horrible jobs out the way. All new brake lines are now made along with the hole in the floor ready for welding.

C020895E-494A-4FC6-8D46-389655931C47.webp

we also refitted the prop and exhaust to speed things up.
F3CFCF54-B709-4686-9681-51D519B036FE.webp

then we just fitted various brackets to speed up assembly later.

we had to cut the rust out and make a patch which was fiddley. We removed the seat and proped the carpet up out the way.

and insert made ready for welding.

once it’s in we’ll be sealing in the whole underside with a waxoil. There’s so many small scuffs from perilously being too low.

Little Friday update. We’ve been having issues trying to get shocks. We had a complete kit on order that never arrived, the seller kept giving us false promises. We ended up having to pay our local GSF for a set of Monroe shocks. We should finally get the Zed back on her own wheels this weekend.

The welding has been done under the drivers seat where the bung is. This is the weld in its raw state and now needs tidying up and unsealing.

We also gave the Zed a service and fitted some new spark plugs. Safe to say this oil filter was well past it, when a filter gets this bad it’s risky for the engine as they start to brake down and you also loose the good seal that effects oil pressure.

Very nice indeed.

How will you be applying the underseal? Will be looking to do something similar I would expect.

My Z has also taken on some damage from being too low. Underside chassis rails have scraped speedbumps, catalytic converter has a protective cover flapping around, exhaust heatshield crumpled in a section, engine x-brace mangled amongst other issues.

Used to see oil filters like that regularly, most usually on Vauxhall Corsa. By that state you would be better running without.

Cracking update today. We had one hell of a day and so many visitors.

Safe to say she’s very nearly there now. Just need to connect up the brake lines and bleed the system. Some other little niggles to sort but nothing big.

Rear end was assembled and brakes fitted all round.
