Anyone had an issue with the roof not retracting properly?

Mine gets so far but one of the metal bars of the frame is getting stuck on the roll hoops(standard roll hoops).

Any ideas what I need to adjust?

There are straps under the actual soft-top fabric that control the frame and its movements, you might want to look for them and see that they are properly attached.

Well they look attached, does this look right to anyone?
Hard to say from the pictures, but they do look loose. Try opening the roof and seeing why the ribs hang up. See if moving the ribs helps open and close the roof, that might be your clue?

Can only be a seized up pivot point. How long is it since the roof was lowered? I suspect you’re going to need an assistant.

I recently bought it but I would guess a couple of years looking at the MOT mileage

Are all roofs the same on z3s as it might be that I get a good roof from a breaker and have that fitted as this roof is quite tatty

Yes all the same. If you get one from a facelift car it will have a liner too. I would get the old cover off that one and see if the frame is bent or seized first

You sure it isn’t an electric roof?

Also as previously commented on, you need to tilt the first section up about 45 degrees before the rest will fold away

The reason you need to do this is because it takes the tension out and allows the roof to fold all the way down. After undoing the catches on the windscreen rail just push the front of the roof upwards by two or three inches with one hand and hold it before pressing the switch. Once the roof is in motion you can let go. Sounds complicated but it isn’t because your hand is there anyway after undoing the catches. Takes 2-3 seconds max. If I don’t do this on my Zed the roof retracts to the point just as shown on your photo, then goes no further. The roof is as tight as a drum and you can hear the motor begin to strain( so don’t keep the switch pressed!). Try both and see the difference.

It is an electric roof, by helping it I got it as far as the second pics. I'll try some of the suggestions and see if it goes further 🙂

There is no way it should have opened on the motor without you folding the first section up 45 degrees first..the microswitch is on that first hinge. It may have been by-passed which is common if the wires have split. If it has then there is a risk you have ended up with a distorted frame

Oh dear doesn't sound good, the first problem was the frame was getting stuck on the roll hoop, giving it some help before it got there seemed ed to sort that but it then only got as far as the later pic where it is half closed but won't fold any further, so my logoc say something isn't moving as it should somewhere along the line. I will have another go in a bit with some help so I'm free to easily see what is moving

The stiffness in the frame maybe because it’s slightly bent..but worth a quick spray with lube. If it’s any consolation the roof on my newly aquired zed is exactly the same. I picked up a new frame locally which I will swap out and then get a new cover fitted.

If it is an electrically operated roof I would suggest the best thing to do is disconnect the hydraulic ram so that you can operate it entirely manually. Get an assistant, have one each side and see if you can manhandle it to open or close.

Tony.
