Can you access the drain tubes without removing the wheelarch liners? Or does anyone know how to access them from the wheelarch?
I recall a post somewhere that showed how ro do it. Have to remove the wheel to get at the liner and then you can see the drain plug.

Tbh, I know were a few have siezed where the drain holes were clear, seems the effects of the damp environment its located in can cause general condensation which corrodes the motor, but fear not quite a few peeps have soaked them in deisel overnight, and brought em back to life, so dont assume its a new motor cause its stopped working,
Relocate it to the boot, as per Z3, an where it should have been from the start.

I've tested today mine, seems both driver and passenger sides drains are ok, but I will relocate it this summer for sure. What a stupid design, honestly. Not something I've expected for German car!

drain holes outlets can be accessed by removing a small cover at the front of the rear wheel arch liners.
they have a star/cross shaped rubber bung over the end of them
I is not necessary to mess with them if not blocked. I've got my miss today to put some water on the roof while I am laying close to back axle. There was pretty evident stream of water. So, I've assumed drains are ok. In any case I am going to relocate the motor at some point. If this can be done for under 100 quids - this is no brainer. Even with trip to Durham - far cheaper that any garage would charge to fix. Once relocated it can be easily accesses in any case.

you have to take the roof out to get to it, to even be able to start the relocation.
Ihave impression that some of forum members developed a technique to access the motor without removing roof. Anyways, there is a guys who do relocation on pretty reasonable price, one in London, one in Durham. If it is necessary to remove roof i am ok with it as lng as i am not involved ;) too complicated for my mechanics skills!

Sorry , but your wrong the roof Is left in situ, all the work is done from inside the boot, but you have to be a bit bendy and long arms .
I did 80% of the work myself but got the guy nr Durham to finish the last bit, coz im old an not tooo bendy ,
However now he only charges £80, for the complete job, so no brainer,

I've just checked mine and the outlet appears to be just in front of the wheelarch from under a plastec cover. i will check later if I can remove the cover and get a small rodding wire up the tube to keep it clear.

I'd won't bother if it not blocked. Pour some water at the roof and watch if there is a water flow from outlets. If there is some crap inside inserting the wire may actually disturb it, and then crap may block the pipe...

Relocation to the boot make sense though, defo will do at some point.

I've fixed 3 or 4 this year for people and have always managed to revive the old motor. I take the roof right off, remove the lower bung plugs, clear both drains visibly, and then relocate the motor to the boot behind a false carpet panel, before putting the roof back on.

Whole process usually takes about 6-7 hours. I'm in Bristol and will do it in a warm, dry double garage at home for about £175 If anyone wants it done drop me a PM or email me. (Z4's only)

Hi,
I have had my motor changed but to avoid it happening again it makes sense to relocate it. I am in BOS so not too far from you, can you let me have your details?
