I also had two Rolex watches in the past. Bought an air king and a submariner during the 80s. I had a job contract in South Africa, a quite dangerous job that paid well, so cpuld afford spending some money on luxuries.
Wore them daily and enjoyed them.
Sold the sub during Covid, I thought that prices woudnt go any higher.
kept the air king as a reminder.
But with my diabetes condition wearing my wrist blood monitor is more important than flexing a rolex, so it rests in the original box.
my wife wears it sometimes…
the whole watch collecting thing is crazy, I paid £ 1.600 for the air king and had an offer for 3.600 last year.
the sub sold for 23.000 € at auction… almost five times more from the price I paid back in the day. crazy money

I treated myself to a Tudor Heritage Ranger a few years ago and I wore it every day for a couple of years, at work and everywhere. My work environment absolutely destroyed the leather bund strap so I looked into getting a new replacement strap. Tudor wanted over £400 for the strap even without a new deployment buckle so I bought a nice handmade copy from an Ebay seller. I'm very happy with it and it only cost me around £50 delivered.

It's quite a plain watch but that's what I like about it. It just tells the time, no date. The illuminated dial is like a torch at night, it's the best I've ever seen.

I have a collection of around 40 watches that I've collected over the years, most are self wind or automatic movements but I do have a few battery watches too. Nothing of any real value though. I'll put a few pics up later
Any chance of your add please Jack, although that Tudor was a bit cheap, thinking maybe not right so I'd prob leave that one.o_O ..............=))

Oh!. This is a watch forum? I don't have 40. Just half a dozen.

Submariner 14060. Automatic. So winds itself when you move your hand real fast. er. in the shower.

Another Speedmaster. Y'gotta wind this one every few days. If you don't then it stops and you spend half an hour setting up the time, date, moonphase and coz it takes so long you're late for work. That's why I love the above, NonDate Submariner.

Another Speedmaster. But this one is slightly smaller. It's also Auto/SelfWinding. But if not worn for a few days it has the same date setting issues. I bought this one with a silver dial but as my eyes aged I couldn't see the silver hands on the silver dial so had WOS swap the dial for a black one.

Tudor Chrnograph. Also Automatic. Also had this one redialed at the same time so I can see the time without me glasses.

That Airking looks like a more modern one (Or new bracelet? solid end links on the bracelet) - you sure it's 80's (or is that just what you tell the missus - "What? This? Oh. I've had this for years luv"

Ive beaten it up so hard that it needed refurbishing. Tooj it to the shop and they swapped beacelet, dials and the “crown”.
still have the originals in a box.
its an 80s facelift… :-)

Only trouble with those nice brands I couldn’t justify the price originality I was looking at the bottom end of the market bang for buck

But I think at my top end the Ginault looks a good build for the money.

Thanks for the tip Jack  but having 10 unused time pieces already I think the money might be better spent on the upcommming heating bill as getting to the age where I'm feeling the cold more and more. ;)

Fine words of wisdom Roy that I wish I could apply to my own life. When I was a kid I had next to f*** all so I covetted my "things" as I've lived my adult life. I suppose it's a type of OCD. I've collected all sorts of useless stuff over the last 50yrs. I've got 15 air rifles, around 40 watches, probably 100 or so pocket knives/sheath knives. I've collected denim jackets, leather jackets and all sorts of other useless sh**e. Why does anyone need 20 pairs of Levis jeans ???? Not much of any of it has any value but I have started to thin out my obsession. I sold a lot of my denim and leather jackets and probably broke even on most of them.

On the bright side though, when it gets cold me and the missus will just get dressed up in Levis and leather jackets, oh and I've forgot to mention the half a dozen or so sheepskin jackets/coats that are dotted around the place.

Jill said lets have a clear out and send it to the charity shop for the starving people in Africa, but what does an African need a sheepskin coat for and more to the point, if my clothes fit them, they sure aint going to be starving

Jack we must come from a likewise mould. Couldn't have a watch of my own till I went to work on a farm full time and then had to give my mum over half my wages, 8 of us crammed into two bedrooms, 3boys in box room,5 girls in larger bedroom. My watches are mostly presents that they thought I'd really like god bless. Lived at No; 13 council house but only unlucky for some. Just sold for 1.1mill in the village where I was born. (Huge front and back gardens.) 10 at mealtimes inc mum and dad, nothing went to waste, poor dog. Here we all are Poor but Happy strict upbringing by x army ww2 father.

I was going to say far right of the picture and I think that’s what Paul meant. All down to your perspective I guess. Just trying to picture him driving a bloody tank, . . . . . . or a Fiat 500.

Tony.

Didnt think you were any of them Roy, they all seem to have hair
