Restoration stuff, Morris convertible

A few other discrete mods: 1275 engine, discs and servo, electronic ignition, Mini heater and two-speed wipers, Mini seats, halogen headlights, etc.
The convertible that I am working on also has a 1275 but what surprised me is that its on a single SU carb, from what I remember the 1275 had twin SU's

Back in the day, twin 1 1/4" SUs were the way to go (Cooper S, MG Midget etc.). Later 1275s, particularly the MG Metro, used a single 1 3/4" SU on a well designed inlet manifold. Still a good way to go for a tuned road engine.

Someone probably fitted the original Moggy manifold(s) Sean, making it easier to connect up. They may have fitted a single 11/2" SU instead of the 11/4"one.

Tony.

Some of the old Jags had twin 1 3/4" Sus.

I think twin or single depended on the car.
Single HIF 44 (1.3/4") usually recommended in the Morris world for a 1275 along with a different manifold, though mine still has an 1.1/4" carb and standard manifold. Breathtaking acceleration though. At 70mph you're living on the edge and glad you're affairs are in order.

The HIF carbs came in later along with the Metro A series engines and Maestro. The Twin SUs were as you say usually on the "sportier" models such as MG 1100 and 1300, Vanden Plas, and Clubman 1275 GT etc.

Tony.

I rebuilt a 1275 Midget and fitted it with a single SU HIF 1 3/4" carb. Much easier to set up than twins and gave excellent performance. It's a very popular mod on the 1275 engine. My Dolomite shown earlier, has twin 1 1/2" HS SUs, and once set up they work very well.

That Minor convertible is an absolute smasher isn't it? I once drove a Minor saloon from Chichester to Troon, a journey of about 500 miles. The car was fine plodding along the motorway at 50 mph, but I thought I would never be able to stand up straight again afterwards. Dreadful driving position and very thin seats. It must be much better with modern car seats.

36,000 mile TR7 DHC

Do you belong to The TR Register ? I was a member when I had my TR4 good club Geoff

No

TR Drivers Club , the Register were (are) very anti TR7 , not all members but in my experience i always got negative feed back from Register members, the drivers club are not a a business so run by proper enthusiasts.

What is this ‘carb’ thing you lot are on about?

I thought we all knew that in 2019 ‘carbs’ are bad and protein is good??
Just give it a protein bar and carry on

That’s a shame thought that they had a section for TR 7s & 8s that was well supported

The same conflicts arise in MG circles too. The MG Owners Club is much more of a business than a proper club and has provided a good living for the guy who set it up. As a business they have smart premises, workshops and sell most spare parts, particularly for MGB and later cars. The MG Car Club was founded in 1930 and still operates for the members and is administered by the members. They only have a handful of paid employees to keep the office running and see to financial matters. There is much rivalry between the organisations.

Some 25 years ago I bought a 1966 MG Midget from my boss who was an avid MG enthusiast. He instructed me not to join the MG Owners Club but to join the MG Car Club. Sounds like not much has changed in the meantime.....
