im what you would describe as a bush mechanic,I'll fix something to get us home or finish a job on the farm ,but I have no real intrest in doing maintenance beyond oil and plug change. So I ship it off to my mate in the agri workshop. You usually find agri engineers are the best as they have to fix loads of diffrent stuff from lawnmowers ,chainsaws to massive combines and a lot of its done without plugging into a computer. The M needed disks ,shoes ,pads ,water pump, tensioner pulley,ac and fan belt .started at 9 finished at 12.30.I only did one front wheel as my buddy did the others while I was talking. But I thought I'd share the routine for changing the water pump on the ///m.
Start by undoing 2 pegs on top of radiator shroud, only the2 that fix it to the radiator in the corners no need to do any more, undo the top hose on the engine side only ,give the nut that holds the viscous fan a couple of sharp taps with a drift and a big persuader (hammer) it's left hand thread this should loosen it enough mine came of by hand but I had a spanner as well if needed.the shroud and fan now come out together.losen the fan belt tensioner undo the hydraulic tensioner put them safe.undo the bottom hose on rad side.take off one of the air intake trumpets nearest the rad this is a bit hard because you have to pull it back over the studs ,not difficult just that the rubber is stiff .this allows you to get at the hose on the top of the pump.losen the jubilee clip.undo 6 bolts on the front of the pump one is slightly awkward.there a wire connection on the top pul it apart and the whole thing comes off easy.the gasket on the engine was good on ours so that saved time ,replaced the ac belt and built it back really easily,I don't know were we lucky but it was less of a job than I thought
. Got to do the 2.8 now lol .it's a bit difrent I think I don't know what BMW would of charged but it cost me £70 for the whole lot
