Removing Rust with Electrolysis

im gona send her in the shed first...... ;)
the problem im having is the charger...when the battery has charged the charger stops ...stupid thing X(

12 hours on charge.....iv changed the sacrificial part for a bit of axle stand.........and put a battery in the loop to keep the charger going.
and heres the results.......

it does work....its going to be left a little longer and then cleaned off.... will post the results

Swamper i use Electrolysis for polishing dental appliances at my lab,in a smaller tank to yours, this process is the same as yours,I would think not only will you remove rust ect but also a layer of good metal from the piston cylinder bore, that will surely make them leak,if i leave something in to long it becomes thiner as the solution gets warmer and more charged, just a thought.pete

good point Pete.......i will check it out but the cylinder bore is empty and sealed....but good point ;)

A friend of mine refurbs lorry parts ,all his brake ect that are corroaded go in a Ultrasonic bath for a day they come out like new,i also use ultrasonics too and oftern put my metal detecting finds in this ,the results are amazing and there no metal loss just the rubbish.

interesting.... get some pics of the results up Pete if you have them?

Hi Swamper,

Any update/results?

Cheers

Brian

all rust has been removed now using the method but the metal is now black (as it should be after this) and now need to spend a few hours in coke to remove the coating.

i will take some more pics when iv got chance ...i will do it just need to finish it off :-bd

^^ Thanks, looking forward to seeing the results.

first parts are now coming out of the coke bath

Great results Wayne I've made a bucket too at work but not got anything to de rust yet but I'm sure it'll come in handy at some point. Are you having the calipers powder coated?

i was just going to spray them Daz....but may powder coat them now you suggested it ;)
for some reason the caliper thats in soak now isnt coming up as good.......will leave it a bit longer but may try vinegar if the coke isnt strong enough....its all a learning curve.
will let you know how i get on ;)

edit.....just checked on the caliper and dried it off....as you can see the rust has gone but its left a coating on it.

Hi Swamps, been watching this thread with interest. Looking at the results, I think you would be happier with the parts being sand blasted, It would leave a better finish. I think you will find the rust comes back through the paint aswell, with them as they are at the moment.

Mike

agreed Mike...but this is just a bit of an experiment to see what results can be achieved rather than just assuming that it works,.
im just in the process of switching the soak and im trying white vinegar..... seems to have a much better reaction ;)

have you seen any of the Youtube using Molasses to remove rust? :-?
Mike

nope... interested.... put um up? :-?

just had a look.....will investigate ;)
