Removing OEM hose clips - technique

Due to my wallet haemorrhaging money at the moment for non Z3 related things, l am going to have to fix my water pump on a budget. I managed to source some of the parts from Germany which has saved me quite a few quid, and looking at the top and bottom hoses they appear to be in very good condition... so l am hoping to be able to re-use them..

With that in mind, does anyone know a technique for removing the factory fit jubilee clips? Looking at them l think there might be the potential for me to damage the hoses if l attack the clips.. so l am hoping that there is a knack to it?
 
I think there is a tool for it with out looking im asuming they look like crimped jubilee clips?
They are actually a clasp one side clips over a hump on he other side they are reusable as mine where unclipped and reclipped on the steering rack gaiters when i had the tracking done.you may get them off with long nose pliers but im sure like with everything theres a tool but its probably cheaper to buy clips :mad:
 
Personally I wouldn't re use those type of clips on old hoses. Far better to get some new jubilee clips (worm drive clips) that have a hexagon drive then you can use 1/4" drive sockets to tighten them. Plus they're usually a bit wider than the factory fit ones and give a better seal.

What he said. The clips are probably as old as the rest of the car and not worth saving the price of a few new jubilee clips, if an old one lets go it won't be at a good time, never is. It's going to be late at night in the rain when you've got somewhere to go.
 
@Alan W As yours is a facelift I guess the thermostat is plastic as it is on the M54 3.0 and 2.2. There are no jubilee clips on these but there is a thin wire clip that pushes into a slot in the housing. This is U shaped and can be pulled nearly out and will then release the hose. They are sealed with an O ring.into the housing.
DO NOT CUT the bands or you are into new hoses.

Agree - also worth buying a flexy 1/4" extension piece (inexpensive) and invaluable for accessing awkward clips.
