Does anyone know how wide the double-sided tape should be to hold down the roof fabric under the rear window trim?

I have a second-hand window to install. First one I've done.

I'm guessing 8-12mm ?

hi when i replaced my z3 window it came with 5mm wide double sided tape.
did the job ok.
when you do the window it's best to have a friend handy. 2 man or woman job.
was a bit fiddly starting the zip in the right place..

5mm. Excellent. Was hoping for a response from experience.

Do you think that was the ideal size? Or do you remembering thinking it could have been 1 or 2 mm smaller or bigger? Has it held it down well since you fitted it? Thanks.

Got my usual assistant lined up to help :)

Hi .yes it's held down well. Not been using the z3 much. Winters hear it's mgzt time.
From memory I suppose it could have been slightly wider. After the double sided tape if fitted you need a little bit of fabric to tuck under the trim that runs arounf the window
Suppose slightly bigger is possible but I used the 5mm supplied and it did the job.

Good tip when fitting window with Zip is to put a stitch in before and after each curve. It has a habit of opening up when you are almost round

I used 3mm 3m double sided tape. I fed it in as I cloed the gap up. I closed the gap by inserting a butter knife into the plastic trim, as I brought the knife around the material just slipped in. Just kept poking the tape in as I slip the knife around,

I was going to get 3M. But any reason you only used 3mm (which I have to say doesn't seem very much) when 5mm fits?

It is only to hold the material in place and does not need much. The 3mm tape was easy to stuff into the gap, I would think thicker tape would be harder to do,

I bought one of the replacement rear windows but found it impossible to get the flap neatly put away. I replaced another 2 rear windows by sending the old ones away and having new plastic fitted to the existing zips. Fitted much better and far easier to refit including tucking in the beading trim. On the replacement window from Germany, it proved impossible to get the flap of material to sit in the beading so I ended up just glueing it down, not the neatest job.

Are OEM rear windows an easier fit than aftermarket? No doubt cost more.

Well I've just pulled out the fabric from the seam as curiosity got the better of me. Due to the construction 5mm is the widest you'd use and 3mm I can see would work fine too.

I have a genuine lightly used screen to put in. Although if I was buying a new one I would be sending the old one away for a new piece of plastic to be inserted into the original zip. I think that increases the chances of success.

Thanks for all the input.

In terms of risk of finding a quality aftermarket item I would say yes from everything I've read. But a new piece of plastic in the original zip is not only a very good compromise but the cheapest option of all.
