I'm going to convert the rear lights on my Z4 so that I have 2 reversing lights by fitting an O/S/R light unit from a LHD drive car. I have to somehow then have a rear fog light for the M.O.T. so any helpful suggestions regarding which light to use for it will be appreciated I'm currently thinking a Mini 1 reversing light let into the centre of the rear bumper just below the no. plate would do the job.
Having been looking around on the Z4 forums most people go the other way and change the N/S/R light unit from a LHD car, to go for the all red look, but I don't think that's for me.

I have a plan in my head and some bits on order form China. The light unit itself should land sometime this week from Lithuania, I've had the O/S light out of mine today and I think I will be able to "split" the light unit in two with some careful work and then maybe I can fit some LED lights inside and not need to cut the bumper, which I would prefer to be honest. The end result would look tidier and be less obvious.:)

Does the zed 4 have a seperate side light and brake light if so if you fit a dual filamant bulb stop/tail in to the standard light fitting can the fog not be the same light as the side light?
Wiring it this way in effect will make the side as bright as a fog when the fog light is switched on?

I wish it were that simple Ant, the Z4 has a set of single contact 21w bulbs which are powered differently for each application by the OBC. I've just seen a "mod" on the Z4 forum showing that you can link 2 of the 5 wires in the rear light plug to give a full "round" stop light instead of a half circle. I'm not too sure about that but this post goes back a couple of years or more and up to present there are no replies of it causing any issues.
Some have done it by Scotchlock as per the original post and other have soldered a bridge wire between the two wires.

So you get a full ring side light and a half ring brake light ?

Hi @t-tony I might be talking rubbish as usual but if you only need one reversing light couldn't you fit right hand lens/light unit with a clear lens so they match and then red led bulb (if one is made) so that it shows red then no rewiring needed except for perhaps a resistor.

I had considered that as an option Brian, thank you, and it would certainly be do able. The seller I've got my indicator bulbs from do a red Cree style bulb for £5 (a pair) and Shirl is heading over there soon!
I like the idea of 2 reversing lights though so this may be a last resort.

Why do you want two reversing lights?

The easiest way to do this is per @Brian4 suggestion
Mainly because that's the way everyone else has gone, which I think is taking the easy route! But also because I like to be different, I've not seen one done the way I'm aiming for.

Nice touch Stevie, that's what I like, to be different and not take the easy option. I've been looking at those laser lights too. Cool!. A guy at work suggested having a central fog light on a hinged bracket mounted under the rear bumper and operated by a c/locking solenoid so that when you switched it on it swings out from under the rear bumper!

So my rear light from a LHD car arrived this week. Now I have some very simple mods to do so I end up with 2 reversing lights and 2 rear fog lights. All nice and symmetrical, like cars are meant to be.

More to follow on wiring mods. That looks better !
