I got a problem with my rear handbrake have removed the shoes and pretty much think the springs were put on the wrong way the adjuster was hard to turn and the long spring was put on the top and the shorter spring with two coils and the cutout was on the bottom i didnt notice which way the shoes were when i pulled them out either. has anyone got a picture of how it supposed to be assembled... i have googled but cant find anything yet

the holes in my brake back plate that hold the lockheed fasteners on have rounded too so need to fix that either new back plate or repair any suggestions ?

does the adjuster sit in the large shoe slot or the smaller one ?

i just had a look in the shed and it looks that way i thought it seemed a bit daft as it fouls the spring for adjustment but i suppose the spring in the way of the brass wheel stops it coming out of adjustment it looks aas though the wide recess in the shoe is for the adjuster wheel and the narrow recess in the shoe is for the mechanism that attaches to the cable.. just need to figure out how to get the back plate off for repair next i have a look on peilcanparts

There's a very easy fix for enlarged holes on back plates. Courtesy of @t-tony

You'll need to pull the spring off the pin. Then replace the pin with a 40mm (I think) bolt. You can then use a washer to go over the enlarged hole.

Another washer and nyloc nut to do thing up and tension.

Just done mine on the 3.0. I always have to find a picture. I'm pretty certain it was Pelican I used for reference.

One of these is helpful for pulling the springs out to refit.

Make that a 4.0 or a 4mm bolt. 40 is a bit OTT.;)=)) But yes it's any easy quick fix. We did this on Alejandro's car a while back.

Long nosed Mole/Vice grips are good for relocating the shoes onto the spreader and adjusters.

40mm will be the length though. Well as I recall.

4mm sounds about right for the diameter. It needs to be just about big enough to push a little remaining metal out of the way in the hole.

I remember doing mine about 5 yrs ago, following very useful guidance written by Mike Fishwick on .net
Also used washers on enlarged hole in backplate, much easier than removing it

i made a washer type thing that the 1/4 turn thing went through out of a piece of plate shaped it to fit at the back of the plate made it whole load bigger and it holds the shoes on great... adjusted up the handbrake as per spec tried it on slope it holds great but theres no way will it hold on the hill by the side of my house... ahh well i just have to live with it for the moment.... hoping to get down to @colb wales zedshed some time and we can have another look at it with both wheels off the floor and try and get the balance between the two wheels better...

I connect the springs to the shoes the clip the long nose mole grips to the shoe and use them as a lever to pull the shoe into place.
