I can honestly say, hand on heart, I have never had a car break down on me (except for the ones I crashed)
I must be most unlucky-----I have been towed off motorways 5 times in the last 14 years.
3 times in a 525d e39 in its first year of life from new and twice in an X type Jag again within its first 12 month of new.

The Jag went at 20 month old with 82,000 on the clock , with electronic/computer faults it had from new.

Never broke down off motorways thought!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That really is bad luck.

I handed over a brand new shiny Defender to a lovely family once.

They rang soon after, it broke down on their way home.

We should have a coffee one day when I'm passing, our exchange of stories would be entertaining.
Oh yeah you will have many similar stories to me I'm sure. I'm sure we will be on the same cruise at some point. Please come over and introduce yourself.

I travelled to Birmingham to see a "pristine" MX5 that was plated (badly) on the sills and when he opened the bonnet to show me how clean it was I put my hand down the side of the front rails and pushed my had through them so badly there was a crunch noise and a rain of rust into the under tray the dealer got a strop on and slammed the bonnet closed and walked off to his little room and never came out again ;) and believe it or not this was the norm, take for instance the yellow one from Bridgewater that had at least the front arms welded but the sills were badly blistered and on slightly bursting one it widdled rusty water for the whole time we were there..... that was another "pristine example" and we gave ourselves a large budget and i'm not over fussy as I needed a project car but what people class as "out of the box" was terrible and in some cases dangerous :(

I'm trying to put my friend off having an MX-5 now, seen two now that were badly corroded. T-tony must have seen a few, he says they're all rusty. Such a shame as she had her heart set on one.

@Tfp When I go and buy my daily run around I go in with a list of would likes and not so important bits.. I then also tell them exactly how much I am prepared to spend on PCP ... I like VW as they have always been honest. I also always go for ex demonstrators. My current VW Passat CC Tdi was a 30k plus car.. less than a year old.. 22k.. thank you.. and it has all the toys. This will be car no 6 from Audi VW Finance and they always solve and issue. One of my previous Passat's decided to take out the power loom and two injectors at 68K.. well sir its past the 60k w'tee... one call to VW.. and they footed the bill fully. So finding and honest dealer and more importantly having backup is important to me as. Not all the motor trade are bad.. its just the few that tarnish the rest.

I must be most unlucky
I did have one little mishap with a 318i but that was my own fault.
This is a story I have told a few times on here.
Parked where I should not have been parked at Amsterdam airport waiting for a mate of mine to arrive.
Saw the temp go up but did not turn the engine off as I did not want to have to check under the bonnet, if I was spotted, I would incur a heavy fine.
Parked in front of me was a Bentley, I saw the boot open (done by remote by the owner a few feet away)
He was bent over with his backside inches from my bonnet packing his bags in the boot.
My expansion tank blew up, when the steam cleared, the owner was laying on top of his bags in his boot (big boots those things have)
I had to move, so drove about 5 km, it is all one way roads, to a petrol station and parked up.
Next day, new radiator and all was good, bulletproof these engines....

Sold my mate a lovely 318i.

He'd had it a week or so, got stuck in traffic and the same happened, expansion tank burst.

I got the phone call "Timmy, this car you sold me"

So I'm pleased to report that I had a successful purchase today, some people can describe cars properly.

And it happened to be a lovely Z3 done only 55,000 miles and never seen a salty road by the looks of it.

I keep looking through adverts for Z3's as I'm sure many of us do to pass our time.

So many people don't include pics of what we want to see.

Drivers seat bolster and base.

Engine bay, especially the front landing panel area, so many pics exclude this particular area.

And many hide the drivers seat bolster by carefully laying the seatbelt over it.

Don't they realise that if they hide these areas people will just assume they are in poor condition and just move on to others?

We all know a 14 year old car will have some wear, but we do want to see how much.

When I see strategic photography like this I straight away think I'm dealing with a "not so honest" person.

Anyone else think along these lines or am I just daft?

I get frustrated with external only pictures on adverts. Then there are those taken that are blurred or several photos of the same angle.

Why not open the roof and show the interior at least, or at least show the interior at all.

At least with that one you can see it's the standard interior. As you say it's an odd angle, why not stand back a few feet and show the whole interior. Would make me think it's hiding something.

Mazda and Mitsubishi are both the same in the fact they have no anti-corrosion whatsoever, I do work a lot of work for a local dealership and they are terrible,

I didn't know that and we have a Shogun for 6 years! How can modern day car firms not offer anti corrosion warranties? I'm amazed they sell anything with the offerings from other manufacturers. If BMW ever get round to releasing this new Z3 that's on the cards it may put a dent in the MX-5's sales and it will certainly come with the relevant warranty.
