Radio volume control gone wild

We had exactly this problem with a Miata a few years ago. The volume knob on the (stock ?) radio really has a mind of its own. Right now the volume is at full (I hope !!) and there is no way of turning it down. I'm about to go deaf

We didn't turn it up to door-rattling full volume, it was suddenly just there !

Should I expect this to be a repairable problem or should we just replace it with a new radio ?

Probably quicker and easier to replace it with something from this century. Music options have changed a lot since these cars were built.

Had this on an amplifier a while ago. Its the way volume is controlled on digital systems. The the control is done using a plastic film with complex layout and pick up device with several fingers - the two encode the volume level directly in a digital format.

The problem is that sometimes, the lubricant gets hot and seeps onto the track inside the control pot, covers up the contacts and the system then thinks you've set full volume.

Should be repairable - either strip down the volume control and spray it with contact cleaner or just have it replaced. Should be a cheap fix.
