We welcomed this lovely Z3 to the #ZedShed today! @ZTec's lovely early 1.9 is due some TLC, and arrived with a reasonable list of things needing replacement or improvement. The details of which will be revealed over the next 2 weeks while it stays with us.

Credit where credit is due, it's in fantastic condition! The key things Tec wanted us to look at was replacing the rear beam bushes, and generally check over the suspension. New water pump and other general sundries too!

Up in the air, and lets get started! Paul and I had been left in charge while Lee & Oldguysrule went for a wedding suit fitting. After we got back from an extended Costa break we got stuck in

Removal of the rear exhaust section, spare wheel carrier, wheel arch liners, disconnection of the drop links (we are leaving the anti roll bar in place for a change). The liberal spraying of Double T penetrating fluid on all the nuts and bolts we are going to remove!

By this time Lee & Trev had returned, and we could get on with the sub frame removal. Most of the process went smoothly - mainly due to most parts not being corroded badly - but there were a couple of curve balls thrown in... Don't worry Tec, it will all be fine when you collect!

As expected the beam bushes are starting to fail and the rubber is cracking and weak. You can see it reasonable well from this close up before the sub frame was dropped. Plenty of play in them too!

Clamping the brake lines was a paint, and we had to block them off further back than we normally do but no biggy. T-tony's brake line plugs work spot on as usual.

Dropping the sub frame was a little more tricky than usual, the drivers side of the beam unscrewed easily. The passenger side beam however didn't. The corrosion on the thread literally screwed us over. Lots of penetrating fluid, tightening then unscrewing eventually ended with a loud crack as the bolt snapped off near the end.

The good news about all this is that these bolts unscrew, and can easily be replaced. Will order one from BMW and then they nylock in in place. We've had these unscrew themselves on other cars, so nothing to worry about.

Nut took some coaxing out of the socket...
IMG_0055.JPG

Anyway, all this faffing about worked out and the subframe was on the floor...
IMG_0054.JPG

...and then on to the bench!
IMG_0058.JPG

I'd be prepared to have put money that the diff bush was knackered... Yup! Whats left of the middle section came out with a small twist of a screw driver.
IMG_0060.JPG

Should be here ideally . The metal outer ring that it delaminated from.
IMG_0061.JPG

Then it's break the sub frame down and remove the rear beam. At this point we were all tired and it was clocking off time.

Hi Guys,
Just got back to sunny Wales, it was great seeing you all today and actually visiting the infamous Z shed where all the magic happens. I'm really excited to see the progress as it happens. It'll be the longest two weeks ever without my Zed, but as I said to Lee today I'm on my hols for the second week, back on the Friday and back on the train on Saturday morning to Basingstoke. It's a shame i'm so far from the Z shed as it would be a great place to learn more about these great cars from the masters, also the banter that goes on:thumbsup:. Had a look at Paul's @pgunter front brake upgrade, looks good, very tempting. Many thanks for putting the thread together, and look forward to seeing the progress.:)

A short session in the ZedShed today, as it's part one of Lee's stag weekend this evening. We've all got to leave early to make ourselves look pretty :D

Finished stripping down the sub frame, removing the brakes so we can remove the handbrake cables which are well past their best...

IMG_0091.JPG

On to the removal of the beam bushes. Lee had done a bit of research on this and discussed with a local mechanic who suggested a bit of heat being applied first. Lee picked up a basic blow torch from the local DIY shop and we gave it a go...
IMG_0093.JPG

IMG_0092.JPG

Then it's on to the 11 ton press...
IMG_0094.JPG

We put a large socket on top to make the press reach the metal core of the bush. Annoyingly the gaps between adjustment holes are quite wide. Initially quite a lot of force was required, but as soon as the bush started moving it glided out smoothly with little downward pressure applied.

The heat is just enough to degrade the rubber. No more than 10 minutes to remove a beam bush, sorted

Obviously we need to put some new ones in, so plenty of grease applied and back to the press.

Fitted!

We had a something dropped off by a rather dodgy looking delivery driver called Andy who also goes by the name WindyM ;) He was passing through on the way to pick up a spare engine from Spurs fan.

Sub frame reassembled.

Dropped to the floor on to the trolley jack.
IMG_0113.JPG

Will be lifted back in to place one evening this week.

Meanwhile, at the front end Trev and Paul got stuck in to the front shocks. No surprise that it's getting Eibach Sport springs and new shocks all round. One side one by the time I left.

Finally got some wi fi, awesome work chaps, well impressed. Feel guilty being on my hols while you are slaving away on my Zed, can't wait to pick it up and have a drive, it'll be well sorted. Many thanks.
