Today I gave the Z a bit of look over to see what needs doing, what I can do and what I need to get a proper mechanic to do.

Something to lie on, a cup of tea and an inspection lamp - comfort is very important😂

One of the first jobs is to clean this - it looked quite good when damp but now it's dried out its more green than black!
I'm also going to attempt to clean up the rear window as it's pretty milky.
IMG_20220123_102339.jpg

Fitted the wind deflector that came with the car - on my afternoon drive out this made a real difference.
IMG_20220123_103459.jpg

Under the bonnet - I'm going to see how I get on with the strut brace, I'm not sure if it's making things a bit too stiff, after all it isn't a racing car.
IMG_20220123_101619.jpg

This cone filter might go too, I don't like the home made heat shield and I'm sure a standard box with a decent panel filter would be fine.

Also there is an odd blue hose sprouting from the front of the engine, which has been blocked off with a bolt. I'm not sure if this is anything to do with the original airbox, or whether it should go into the small silver metal pipe just to the left?

Outer sills are starting to bubble, so next Saturday I'll put some wax on them just to get them through until I can replace them. Also the bottoms of the rear wings are starting to go, so a I'll earmark a warm spring weekend to get all that sorted.

Underside has been waxed, it seems pretty solid and it also hasn't been slathered on an inch thick, so hopefully it's protecting the floor rather than hiding anything nasty.
IMG_20220123_103412.jpg

There are various other minor things, the seatbelt guides have been previously repaired as seems typical, the radio reception is poor, the heater controls don't light up at night, etc.

But I had a great drive out to the north coast of Cornwall today, its great fun with the hood down and even Mrs Backseateducation likes it. I'm well pleased - bring on the spanners!😀

Excellent thanks guys. I thought the idle was a bit up and down, I'll reattach that hose and see what happens. I wonder why you would do that though? Oddly enough we actually sell Milton at my work, so I'll acquire some!

Well some progress today, although it was a bit damp I didn't want to miss the opportunity.
Managed to give the hood a good clean, although I'll only be able to see the results once it's dried off really so I'm quite expecting it to need another go.
Gave the leather a bit of a clean up, took off some of the rather tacky stickers the bodywork had acquired, fitted some door protectors. I also removed the battery, wire brushed and cleaned up the battery tray. I've just put some wax on it for now, but I'll primer and topcoat it next weekend I hope.
Small things, but I guess it all adds up.
Now all it needs is a bodywork wash ready for a BMWCC Cornwall meet tomorrow.

I also removed the blanking bolt from that small blue pipe, and reattached it where it should be. The idle seemed rougher like that, so I took it off and put the bolt back in. I don't really know why this has been done, but I assume the silver thing the pipe should go into is some kind of emissions control thing, it reminds me of the EGR valve on my old V6 Cougar which I had blanked off. I'm going to leave it as it is until I've fitted a standard airbox and see what happens then.

New wheels collected today. Hopefully in the next month or so I'll be able to get them back down here and put them in for refurb.
They even look good just sitting in the boot of my friend Russ' Mercedes W124 estate!:thumbsup:IMG-20220130-WA0000.jpg

@backseateducation Hi, I'm in Probus and I got a couple of 2.8 Zeds, although ones currently SORN'd and the other's waiting for a new MOT. Also got a Foxwell diagnostic scanner too if you ever need assistance. I can't promise I can sort any problem but I'm happy to try to help if you should need any.

Well, I have spent the last few hours trawling photo albums just to confirm, I’m delighted to see youwhywhy is still out and about.

dscf0165.jpg

I bought this car back in 2008 from a lady in Hitchin if I remember and had a fantastic few years with it and it before selling on to a couple down south again.

dscf0168.jpg

The car had a standard tan interior when I bought it which I swapped out for a full black/blue Z3M interior complete with roll hoops, I see the car has now red seats and door card inserts but can see you still have the ///M oval rear view mirror
I de-tangoed the head lights and put some smoked indicator lenses on the side panels shortly after I purchased and these are still on the car too. (I promise I was not responsible for the exhaust and air filter…)

What mileage is on the car now if you don’t mind me asking?

Wow!
Brian that is fantastic! I'll endeavour to keep her up to standard!
From what I can tell, the guy I bought it off was a friend of the couple you sold it to - unfortunately the gentleman (who I guess is responsible for the other mods), died suddenly several years ago from no apparent cause. His wife then had the car registered in her name, but it mostly sat unused. She then got the guy I bought it off to get it fit for sale - it was MOT'd again in November.
Mileage at that point was 139012, the previous test was in September 2019 at 138731, August 2018 138161 and August 2017 137336 so that would seem to confirm the story.
No wonder most of the interior feels a bit 'loose' and there are quite a few fixings missing - she's obviously been stripped again recently and whoever put the red in didnt put things back together too well!

I’ll dig out some more pics for you when I’m next on my PC, cannot tell you how happy I am to see this. Car was at >98k when I sold it back in 2011.

Managed to get a bit more done today, mostly de-rusting and painting the battery tray. There was no serious rot, so I imagine the rust was just due to some previous acid spillage. Rubbed down, Kurust, primer and paint.
Not a professional standard job but it doesn't need to look factory fresh down there!

During the day I managed to successfully pull my knob off  (it was surprisingly easy, given the comments I've read on here!), and fitted this in it's place.

Tomorrows job is to try and sort out the stereo wiring so I can fit my Jeff Bezos special. I was hoping as the car had a fairly modern Kenwood CD player it would have a ISO plug already but no luck. If I do this successfully I'll be over the moon as me and electrics don't normally go together.

That's better. Standard airbox fitted with Pipercross filter.

As for the radio, I kind of got it working but I just can't make good enough connections, so that's off to be fitted properly.

Wheels are home. Hopefully I'll be able to afford the refurb soon, at least I don't actually need to put them on the car any time soon so I can spread the cost.

Well here's gratitude for you - just after having shown it it's new wheels, the Z died this evening on the way back from Valentines dinner with the Mrs. Lost power and died on the dual carriageway in the dark and with no hard shoulder I had to get as far off to the side as I could. Car would crank but not run. Just as we got out of the car and started to ring the AA, an AA patrol happened to turn up! After protecting us with flashing lights etc, he was preparing to tow the car to a layby and start working on it, when I had a look on the forum and discovered a thread about swapping the fuel pump relay for the horn one to test it. He agreed this was a good idea, so decided to try it before we bothered towing. Car fired up straightaway, so thanks to the knowledge of this forum, and a great AA guy, we were back underway in less than 15 minutes! And I avoided the doghouse! Cheers guys! Happy Valentines! ❤👍

Now the storm has died down, it's a lovely sunny afternoon here, just right for a trip out. So jumped in the Z and..... it won't start again! Same symptoms, plenty of battery but no fuel. Ordered up a brand new pump relay, but I wonder if it's the pump itself that is dying. At least I'm at home this time! Still love it though!
