Thought I’d better start a progress thread for this car, as there’s much to do.
I ‘rescued’ her a few weeks ago from her third NZ owner at the top of the South Island, and drove her 1,000 kms home to Auckland (not counting the ferry ride across Cook Strait).
She’s had a few ‘mods’, including 18-inch Beyern alloys, and the first thing I noticed was constant tramlining and harsh ride, with poor steering response. This was attributed to the cheap, over-width tyres on the front (Chinese-made ‘Goodride’ 245/40R18) which also rubbed the arches during exuberant cornering and/or heavy braking.😜
As mentioned elsewhere on this forum, I’ve now replaced these tyres with some new correct-size (225/40R18) Hankook K125’s, which have transformed the car’s ride and handling, while eliminating the tramlining and rubbing.
The car had been treated to various forms of ‘bling’ by the PO, including ///M-badges everywhere. The original trunk lid ‘3.0i’ badge had been replaced with ‘///M Power’ for example (see first picture).
The car also retained its original Japanese-market rear number plate surround, which I’ve removed.
A new set of plates, upgraded to the ‘Euro’ style, was ordered, and I’ve now fitted the new rear plate which really does lift the aesthetics no end.
Have also replaced the ghastly ‘///M Power’ badges with the original ‘3.0i’ badge (still with the car, thankfully), fixing it with new double-sided foam tape.
Prior to this, I had all the paintwork cut and polished apart from the front bumper, which needs removing and refurbishing.
Not a bad weekend’s work, and I’m well pleased with Primrose’s new-look rear end!😊

It's funny, people outside of Europe want the 'euro look' and the Europeans like the 'US/JDM spec'.

Beautiful z3 and paint looks very good too.

Thanks, here’s a peek of the new front plate, which I fitted today.

Today’s job…replace badly perished/disintegrating antenna grommet with new OEM part.

Handy tip: pop the new grommet into a cup of hot water for a few minutes to soften it first. It’s then possible to mate the grommet with the antenna base probe, although some concentrated force is still required to properly seat it (I used an inverted hammer handle to nudge it fully home).

Antenna instln looks much better now, and all weather-tight again!😊

Today’s job…new engine air filter.
The old one was dated July 2017 and was filthy.
Inlet plenum was cleaned out before fitting a new Mann filter (manuf. date Oct 2022).
Primrose should breathe a little easier now!

Next job will be fitting a new expansion tank, as the original has a pin-hole leak.

New expansion tank installed!
The old one was the original Seeber tank, date stamped May 2000, so not a bad run!
Third pic shows where the pinhole leak was.
New Chinese-made Rein tank appears to be of reasonable quality…time will tell.

To save excess spillage during removal, I siphoned the coolant from the old tank before disconnecting any hoses.
Then after installing and connecting the new tank, I filled it with fresh coolant.
No static leaks, but have yet to run the engine to pressurise/leak check the system and bleed if necessary.

It’s a new year, and time for a new battery…the old one was in poor health and not taking a full charge anymore.
As a replacement, I went for a top quality Varta E44.

Another rainy day job done…⛈

A common issue on the Z3 is ‘seat-rock’ which can be felt under braking or acceleration and is the result of worn-out rubber bushings in the seat rails, supporting the actuator jackscrew nuts.

A popular mod is to replace the old munted rubber bushings with more durable items, machined from ‘Delrin’ plastic material. I recently bought a set of these, made by Odomoter Gears in the USA.

My driver’s seat was the first to get the upgrade today, and took me about an hour all-up if you include cleaning out the underseat area (revealing in my case a Japanese ¥100 coin, indicating the seat hadn’t been out of the car before).
All back together now, and no more seat rocking!

Passenger seat is next….maybe tomorrow 😊

Passenger seat bushings weren’t as worn as the driver’s side, but still warranted replacement.
A couple of the new Delrin spacers needed light sanding to obtain a correct fit in the housing.
Another coin was found…a more recent one from NZ this time😊
On both seats, the smooth domed heads of the lower seat rail mount fitting attach bolts were rusty…all were chemically treated and reprotected with satin black lacquer, and the corresponding rust stains on carpets removed as best I could.

Today I replaced the Z3’s left rear tail light assy, which had a badly crazed/cracked lens. The used one that I replaced it with is in great condition, and came with all the lamps as well.
Also fitted a new trunk light assy (genuine BMW) as the old one had gotten melted at some time in the past, and wasn’t fitting properly.
And before you ask, yes I confirmed that the switch works and light goes out with the boot lid closed, using the “phone-in-the-boot” video method😁✅
