Just so I can get my head round it. I went to a garage today, local, and had them swap two wheels. They took off tyres from two wheels, put them on to the other wheels (which also had tyres on). They had to remove tyres from them as well. Balanced the ones I will use.
Charged me £20 a wheel, so £40. Fair? I need to do one more.
All off the car..I took wheels/tyres to them.
Also was cash when I said card they said they would add vat

That's exactly what I got charged for putting my winter tyres onto spare wheels.

Well you just know that £40 did not go through the till then, into someone’s pocket. At least £10 too much in my opinion.

Tony.

I was expecting £20-£30, but I dont have a great grip on these sort of costs.

We would charge around £16.95 per wheel for that job through the till ( cash or card) so in the ballpark but if you think cash going straight into someone's pocket £10 - £15 a corner would have been a better price.

Stephen

One of the lads did give me a bolt as I broke one and I asked them to take the weights off the older alloys. But the owner didnt know any of that- Just a plain £20 a wheel- I did cough a bit and he said its not the F*****g 1960's lol

We charge £25 for doing a puncture repair with valve and balance but we still get people coming in expecting it to be a fiver .
In this day and age I wouldn't even put a jack under a car for a fiver :whistle:

Stephen.

The alloys I swapped in cost be £50 for 4 (got 1 more to do and the fourth was no better than mine) - alloys were cheaper than the fitting! Think its because I had a good deal on the alloys I expected the same on the fitting lol

I think the problem is cheap new tyres on the internet. Many garages, well certainly in Swindon, won't even entertain mounting your own tyres as they don't want someone else taking their profit for a tyre. Where you do get a helpful garage I think they charge disproprotinately more for it than pre-internet days to put people off. And in these profit focussed days, while they're remounting your tyre they can't be mounting a tyre they've sold with additional profit for them. So you're probably just victim of that.

All this said, my other half recently had a puncture repaired for £10 in Swansea. But Swansea is often cheaper for stuff.
