We may as well enjoy them now as we really all need to go electric eventually, and what with the climate crisis, it could come sooner rather than later. Another 20 years you'll only be able to select the exhaust sound you want, pumped realistically through your 'electrics' (standard) high class sound system. Petrol cars will inevitably be only for the wealthy, maybe later considered obscene!

Drive em whilst you can boys and girls - maybe there's a flip side to grabbing any classic now. Will combustion engine cars inevitably become worthless or will there always be a supply of fuel to drive them and rarities keep appreciating?

Wait....someones forward thinking doing an EV Z3 on here...narrow body rockets past Z3M body.o_O
I think you are right these beautiful cars will become play toys for the rich.
They will buy weekend packages were the cars will be taken to a track and petrol will come as part of that package. But the thing is buy keeping some of these rare beauty’s for our children to see and hopefully drive makes it well worth putting a few good examples away for the future. And hopefully they will see what we see. And you never know it may just inspire Some kind of future design.
Wow I’m getting really deep lol

you make a good case for using our cars now. I have three other cars in the family, one for work (F10 Touring), the significant others E89 and a rather special E82 125i coupe. In the 12 months prior to lockdown, I put 36k miles on across all the cars. All of them have naturally aspirated version of the straight six 3.0 engine (sDrive has the 2.5). These will be our last petrol engines before we transfer to all electric at some point in the future.

I do enjoy my cars, but recognise that the environment needs to win out over the current predilection for fossil fuel burn by an energy hungry human race.

But, your right, they do need using while we can

Don't we all, but it some will be able to afford it and some wont, or you convert it to EV? 20 years I reckon it'll be expensive. And at 97 you may struggle to hold a license, in fact the only car you'll be driving is a Tesla on autopilot. ;)

You will never find me driving a milk float. =))
To be fair my hybrid Golf GTE is bloody good fun, adaptive suspension and over 200bhp on tap but when Willow came out for the summer I soon forgot about it. M suspension and over 300bhp on tap. More fun

Not bad but it's silver, that must halve the value. =))
In all seriousness Mike, it is the worst z3 there is, they look dreadful, it's not really a colour, it's just a nothingness

Didn’t think about that, but yes it’s a very Good point. people do prefer the facelift model. And the beauty of silver is it’s looks clean from a distance even when it’s not. LOL
I wanted a 3.0 but hate the rear end, the original is so much better and suits the car far more, that's why I have a mint 2.8

Said it once and I’ll say it again. There is no such thing as a bad color on a good horse.

Sorry to be boring but on a serious note it is worth knowing how much a car is being offered for in the market. I have an agreed valuation on my 1999 2.8 (M52b28 TU) with 100k miles of £8,500 ( including hard top).....what I hear cries of!!!
The logic I gave, and agreed by the assessor, was to get a reasonably good example would cost around £4k, but it will still need work. I have replaced all the suspension including rear beam bushes etc. much of the brake system, replaced sills and wing panel plus the hood along with a lot of other stuff. Anything I bought for £4k would require much of this work doing also, so add parts and the cost of labour (yes I know many of us do the work ourselves) and there will not be much left out the £8.5k valuation.
I know that if I were to sell it I would be lucky to get £5k, but that's not the point of an insurance valuation. It is the cost to replace the car with one of equivalent spec and condition.
So it is worth knowing market prices and making sure your insurance cover is adequate. That is of course if you ever intend taking it out on the road.

I like them both but I love the extra horses under the bonnet.
