I bought a cold air intake and a new thermostat for my '97 1.9 Z3, so I will soon be dismanteling the front of the engine. The car is about to turn over 95,000 kilometers. What else should I replace as preventative maintainance. I remember reading something about a water pump that tends to fail in cars with this mileage (kilometerage?)

Well worth changing the water pump if it's still the original one, also check all the associated bearings in the aux. belt drive train. Tensioner, idler etc.

Check the condition of the rubber parts; hoses, air ducts and belts. At this age they are getting tired even with a fairly low milage.

Agree new water pump will be a good option and the belt idle pulley's and tensioner if they show any signs of roughness when spun. Makes sense if your stripping the front down and give you peace of mind.
Check all rubber hoses for splits or cracks forming due to age, replace any suspect ones.
