Power steering shudder after bleeding brakes / turning wheel manually?

So changed brake pads and then again jacked up to do a caliper.

On both occasions we had to bleed brakes and also turned the wheels with them in the air.

Both times after putting them back together the power steering would shudder - I’m pretty sure it’s the PAS as it happens at idle (so not only when moving).

Problem has disappeared after a few miles...

PAS fluid is full and looks clean.
No funny noises from PAS.
The ancillary belt could do with a change - showing some small cracks.

It seems linked to the brake changed as only happened then.

I’ve had some thing similar in winter when turning on certain surfaces. But never in summer like this.

Any ideas?

So you saying that at the ripe old age of 21 the poor old shed is getting saggy and needs some extra support on its bits??:bag:

Are you still on the original power steering fluid reservoir.? I have seen in other forums people complaining the filters on the reservoirs get clogged and the power steering pump doesn't get enough fluid under certain conditions and cavitates, just a wild guess in case its this

It’s been changed about 4 yrs ago and once before that too I think.
Is there a filter on these?
Been looking up flushing the system - seems pretty straight forward as long as no pipe work is about to let go.

There is an in built filter inside the power steering reservoir that apart from breaking down itself it apparently gets clogged with bits from inside the rubber hoses on the power steering lines - it's in my to do list at the moment to get this sorted.

If you had the engine running it wouldn't happen. What it is, is that you're basically emptying (evacuating) the pump, pipes and rack piston of oil by working the rack manually. The the pump has to purge the system of air when you fire the motor.
This is why ALL steering checks carried out on an MOT test should be done with the engine running.

Tony.
