My local garage has advised that the source of the leak is the steering rack, the fix will be to remove the rack and get it reconditioned. All pipes and fittings seem to be OK. Cost is £300 to recondition plus remove and replace. Time 6-7 days.
Has anyone any advice before I proceed, is this a common fault for a 1997, M44 with 60,000 miles.with my limited mechanical skills I will have to trust the garage.

Not sure if any member in Wilts that is prepared to help you fit a rack, not difficult. A used rack complete with pipes, pump and cooler (avoids opening up the fluid system) is the easiest and cheapest way. No long term guarantee of course! I can supply as can @spurs fan in a coupe who would be nearer to you.

............. is this a common fault for a 1997, M44 with 60,000 miles...............
the common fault is the clips on the hose to cooler pipe and they are easily replaced with jubilee clips. They have said clips are OK - but it may be worth a closer look - easily viewed down front of rad.

Edit I thought my rack was leaking at one stage but after wiping it all down it turned out to be oil from the filter body joint above the rack.

I would go for a quality reconditioned rack personally if the rack is leaking. Should then last another 20 years! Have not had the failure on my Z3 (80K miles) but my MC had the rack replaced around 150K. Yours does seem like an early failure in terms of miles, but perhaps low miles is the source of the problem if seals etc dry out.

The other steering issue I have had is the cooling pipe corroding and leaking fluid. They seem to corrode badly where the brackets are welded to the pipe. This issue should be quite obvious from the engine bay though.

I would be a little cautious with the diagnosis. These racks are not well known for leaking. But other things are very good at leaking onto them giving that impression. 60k miles is absolutely nothing for a rack either. These things can go on for 150k+ miles with no issue.

You may well find the issue is dealt with when the car comes back. But that might be from 'incidental' replacing of another fitting which was the true source.

I've just dealt with a leak in that area. It was actually a distorted o-ring on the fluid reservoir from over-tightening and it had crept out from the cap. That's certainly one reason the reservoir can look so messy although there is a breather hole in the top anyway.

I have a couple of spare racks. In fact I nearly sold one recently to someone who was told their rack was leaking. I gave the same advice as above and he came back and said I was right and he no longer needed it. Which was fine with me of course.

Recon racks are available on ebay for little more than I would want for a secondhand rack. £160 v £100. Of course I don't know how good the service is but these guys' feedback is exceptional. Secondhand racks are valuable to the 3 Series modding community as they are 'quicker' (less turns end to end) than the factory rack so in high demand and hence price.

If you replace the rack, even with a second-hand one, I would also replace the inner and out tie-rods. These aren't expensive and the tracking will have to be reset anyway. And it probably goes without saying using fresh fluid.

If I'm honest I'm not sure it's the easiest of jobs if you aren't used to using spanners.

Btw I'm only in Swindon if you want a second-hand rack. But honestly I'd have a recon one at £160 in preference. I'm not sure I would want to pay £300 for your garage's recon rack though. But I also can't see them wanting to fit a 3rd party's rack, or at least warranty the full job.

Thanks everyone, back to the garage, its now a reconditioned item with warranty , I,m still cautious on the diagnosis but the mechanics were certain the rack is leaking. I will keep you posted on the outcome.

Hi all - I've posted a new question under this tread as its a similar issue with leaking power steering fluid. If I should post elsewhere please help me on my way as I'm new!

I have a fluid leak from my steering rack - it became apparent when I noticed a noise while going round a round about and when I got home, a drop of fluid on my garage floor. Topped up the steering fluid and the noise is gone but I've had a quick look with car on ramps and the leak appears to be from the top cover on the rack which houses a spring loaded bushing (?). Pictures attached.

From reading through the forums it seems rare for the rack to develop a leak? My question is has anyone else experienced this and is there a quick fix? I haven't tried to remove this cover but from the searches I've done it seems as if there are two o rings which could be the problem - one which seals the cover and one which goes around the spring loaded bushing... I don't want to attempt to remove the cover only to find I can't get it back on again and that I'm stuck on the driveway!

Any advice gratefully received please....

Oh - car has done 39K miles...

Good question. Never seen that before as these steering racks are bulletproof normally.

I can only help by giving the names of what I perceive to be good/cheap suppliers I've seen on ebay previously - I keep things like that bookmarked. Or I have a secondhand rack I can sell you. Honestly, if it comes to it I'd go down the reconditioned root as from memory they are under £200.

Thanks mrscalex - I thought that may be the case so will take a look at the recon option first... I've seen another recent post where a member did a whole lot of steering work and got his rack reconditioned as part of that.... Company in Wakefield I think who advertise on Ebay... Will search out his post again and check how it went.... Think its £180 to recondition from memory... Will post updates as I progress..

@Faheem had his rack overhauled recently and it think it was a relatively quick turnaround at a fair price.
