I have been trying to think of ideas for a road trip to do.
I wanted it to include driving through France, especially the west coast.
I notice there is a ferry that goes from Plymouth to Santander in northern Spain.
A couple of days in Spain and drive back over the Pyrenees and up the west coast of France through Bordeaux, La Rochelle, even visit the wonderfully named city of Brest.
Then either get ferry back to Plymouth from Roscoff or drive along the north coast to another ferry port / chunnel.

Has anybody done this or something similar?

Taking the Pont Aven over to Spain is always a pleasure and providing you stay off the motorways in France you will be fine, although the petrol can be dodgy in France.

We have done the Portsmouth St Malo Ferry. It's an 8pm cruise on a Wednesday so normal nights sleep and you can run down the West coast down into Spain. We have done some of it but not as far down as the Spanish border, it is on the to do list though.

We have not done the ferry over to Spain but have driven all the way down the West coast of France to San Sebastian and all over the Pyrenees West to East as far as Boltana.
The weather on the Spanish side is a lot hotter, dryer and cheaper than the French side

I'd love to do such a run, I will in a couple of years when I have more time on my hands

Did a very similar trip, but in reverse order, a few years ago i.e.drove south and came back on the Santander/ Plymouth overnight ferry. Nice driving routes - San Sebastian is worth a visit but beware weather is very changeable. The Expo was on in Bordeaux at the time which was a great atmosphere - downside was hotel prices trebled. Coast road drive from San Seb. to Santander is very good in a top down Zed.

Beautiful countryside, La Rochelle is lovely, spent a fair amount of time around the west of France over the last 4 years (a little inland mainly) Charente, Haute Vienne, Dordogne.

I'll agree with that. La Rochelle has a stunning marina with all the bars and restaurants running along it. Just lovely.

I regularly do the Portsmouth Santander and drive to Asturias. The crossing is veve comfortable, even in bad weather ( rolls more). In Spring and Summer, dolphins ofen play in the bow waves, and its great fun to people watch when there are Dolphins.
The drive to Asturias is fantastic: right next to the coast, and a slight detour takes you to the Picos de Europa ( check videos of the Vuelta España). Its a 2-hour drive to Gijon, and 1-hour to the Picos- 1. proximity to the coast, and 2 is the Picos from the motorway
