I've had a bit of a rejig in the garage to get better access to the front end. I was going to cheap out and not replace the front bearings as they were fine but the backing plates are too far gone so I've now got new front bearings, backing plates and ABS sensors inbound. In the mean time I am pulling all the old parts off. Nice to see its face, I can't wait for the warmer weather to get the bonnet/bumper painted.

Wow! Living for the most part of my life in a hot climate, these rust photos give me the creeps.
hats off to you Sir and the rest who undertake such projects.
as my worst encounter with rust so far was rubbing a bolt with a wire brush for thirty seconds, I would be standing in the middle of the garage crying if I had to rebuild this.

The joy of Scottish winter roads. The car came from a coastal town as well which won't have helped. The car itself Is actually pretty good but everything that bolts to it needs some love. To be honest I don't think many would have given this car the time of day but I like the challange.

I am back from work and I am going to try and spend a bit of time getting the zed progressing. The hand brake shoes and hardware had arrived whilst I was away. So I got them all back together. I've started stripping a front corner but I am now thinking I'll spin the car around in the garage for some more space. I've got a new torch for the welder arriving today so I can sort the jacking points.

Great to see things are moving on in the Inverurie Z shed, must come and visit when weather improves.Just an old man being nosey.

The brakes turned out perfect, I am just not sure what to do with the wheels. Powdercoat the originals, don't know which colour, or go aftermarket.

I had to trial the bc coilover in for aesthetics

I've got new wish bones and track rod assembly's to fit which will clean everything up. I'd like to get the subframe out for powdercoat but I'll need to see if I can borrow an engine brace as I don't want the engine out just yet.

One small criticism, it’s not a good idea to clamp off the flexible brake hose with “Mole” grips (or any other type of clamp) as it can damage the inner wall of the hose and lead to callipers sticking and brakes binding.
In reality there is no need to pinch the hoses anyway, as all you need to do is push the brake pedal down roughly half way and hold it in the that position using some thing placed between the front edge of the drivers seat and the brake pedal.
What this does is push the pistons in the master cylinder past the ports where fluid enters from the reservoir, so you won’t lose fluid. It’s much easier on the flexible hoses.

Tony.

I cut them in half with a hacksaw first to get the caliper off. All new hardware waiting to go in. The mole is just to stop the brake fluid puddlng on the garage floor.

I got my welder back up and running so I set about making a repair patch for the jacking points. The jack points have a pressed rolled hole which I can't replicate but a bead of weld seems to be close. I did start to tack it in but I ran out of gas... to be continued.

I've also scrounged an engine brace so i should be able to get the front subframe off tomorrow.

The borrowed engine brace is in place. Amazingly I had to make it wider and the last car it was used on was a 7 series. I've got one side stripped and ready to drop. Quick coffee and I'll get the other side done. Surprisingly enough everything so far has come apart without a fight, not bad considering how rusty everything looks. I should get the bits off for powdercoat today along with the wheels. I am looking forward to having the suspension done so I can turn to the engine. I still don't really know the condition of it yet.

That's the other side out and the subframe and brace ready for powdercoat. I've 2 shear bolts on the drivers hub to deal with. The cars radiator has definatly seen better days. Next up.. tidy the shed !

Organised chaos, don't know how I managed so many years doing this from a floor.

I am beginning to think I am getting too old for it. A 2 poster would be great but I don't have the roof hight and it would limit the shed to 1 car.... I need a bigger shed as well haha

That’s why I bought my lift. It was either that or stop messing around with cars, it is quite common to hear me muttering as I get up off the floor, “I’m too old for this s***”. I fitted a reversing camera last week over 2 and a half afternoons.

Tony.
