So you have to concentrate on corrosion that is actually detrimental to the function of the associated parts and when the level of corrosion actually becomes a problem with that component.
My exact thoughts too and ones obvious to me even as someone not in the trade like yourself. I didn't win the argument using it though.
I think there are a number of testers out there who are a bit overzealous in their tests and kinda forget the basic fundamentals.
For mechanical parts 1 month
For structural parts 3 months
If when testing you consider the part is still serviceable for those time periods then a pass or pass and advise.
That's worth knowing. Thanks

This is what I'm talking about. I had Geophys's gorgeous red 2.2 Sport and it's the Z3 I use when I'm in Swansea now. That car is immaculate with just the odd spot of rust underneath. But when I bought it last Aug it had a short MOT so I got in at little notice with my usual place.

These were the advisories in 2019 with Colin.
  • Nearside Front Brake pad(s) wearing thin (1.1.13 (a) (ii))
  • Offside Front Brake pad(s) wearing thin (1.1.13 (a) (ii))
In 2020 with me, 1000 miles later and having spent the previous 12 months in a garage, this:
  • Nearside Rear Direction indicator slightly discoloured (4.4.3 (a))
  • Offside Rear Direction indicator slightly discoloured (4.4.3 (a))
  • Oil leak, but not excessive (8.4.1 (a) (i))
  • Nearside Front Suspension arm corroded but not seriously weakened (5.3.3 (b) (i))
  • Offside Front Suspension arm corroded but not seriously weakened (5.3.3 (b) (i))
  • Nearside Rear Brake hose has slight corrosion to ferrule (1.1.12 (f) (i))
  • Offside Rear Brake hose has slight corrosion to ferrule (1.1.12 (f) (i))
  • Nearside Front Brake hose has slight corrosion to ferrule (1.1.12 (f) (i))
  • Offside Front Brake hose has slight corrosion to ferrule (1.1.12 (f) (i))
  • Offside Rear Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material (1.1.11 (c))
  • Nearside Rear Coil spring corroded (5.3.1 (b) (i))
  • Offside Rear Coil spring corroded (5.3.1 (b) (i))
There is zero probability that any of these items had changed year on year. It's just different testing standards. Now I have all that cr*p on the MOT history of an immaculate car with a nearly immaculate prior MOT record.

The trouble is apart from an over zealous MOT tester I have a long history with the garage and like to keep friendly with them. They service other family cars (can't do it all myself). As I say, I'll being going elsewhere with some of the cars now that are harmed more from this. Foxy (car above) and Willy (new loom & rear-end rebuild).

I fully understand where you’re coming from on this Rob, there’s a guy where I used to work “Mr. Advisory” if ever there was one.
Any body who is put off by “rear springs corroded” etc. clearly has no idea what that means and any knowledgeable person takes it for what it is, bullshit, for want of a better word.

Tony.

If you drop me a PM as a reminder I am going to look through my headlamp collection tonight for a pair for my own current restoration project. I have a few and would be happy to sell the motors from a pre-facelift pair if I have them. The motors are the only item with any value on those things really.
Hi Robert, sorry for delay in responding. I was replying incorrectly via the PM.🙄
Please can I have two levelling motors?
