I had a similar problem found out both rubber hoses from maf to engine were split and the cam shaft sensor was throwing a code up , new hoses and a sensor from ECP mad by HAAS £27 and cured the problems

Tony
Awesome, cheers Tony. I’ll take a look

Hi guys,

So I replaced the camshaft exhaust and inlet sensors and unfortunately I’m still getting the P1520 code.

I have just noticed that the Vanos is rattling, could this be the issue?

thanks, Jack

Yes it could be causing the camshafts to give incorrect position info as far as I’m aware.

Did you reset the codes before going for a drive?

Thanks for the help guys, really appreciated.

Yes changed both can seniors and checked continuity on the wiring then reset the fault code, but the P1520 came back :(

I’ll remove the solenoid and give it a go.

cheers, Jack

Ok, so I purchased an original new camshaft position senior (exhaust), installed the sensor and the engine is running worse - misfire, really lumpy and rough idle.

So I unplug the camshaft exhaust sensor and the car runs perfectly with no fault code!??

I’m completely confused?

Any ideas guys? Appreciate any help.

Thanks, Jack

ok on further inspection I’ve found this -

Could this split in the pipe be the issue??

Answer is yes part of the ccv system so you are getting a massive air leak there causing idle and running issues. I always reccomend a smoke test on these engines to find any leaks they are so dependant on a closed vacuum for correct fueling

I've had a bit of a lumpy idle for a while, mainly when the car is cold. I can get rid of it by clearing the adaptations in INPA but it comes back slowly. I recently found a split in the same location, same hose on mine albeit not as big. I have changed the whole CCV system (that pipe is part of it) but haven't used it enough yet to see if its cured the idle issue.

A split in that hose will definitely cause some sort of idling issue.

Don't plastic covers hide a multitude of problems.

Thanks guys!

I’ll look for a replacement, could have saved myself £115 on a new sensor
It’s a pretty big gash! Still the genuine BMW part so I suppose it’s lasted well for 21 year.

I’ll keep you folks posted after the replacement

Cheers, Jack

The sensor will still likely be at fault, you could try the old one after replacing that split hose but I would be very surprised if it didn't still throw up the code.

Mine didn't throw up any error codes, if were getting an error code then you probably had some sort of issue also with the sensor as Tony says.
