I had a couple of issues with overheating a week or so ago, I've got the 2.8 z3.
My poor little Zed was running over temp when stuck in traffic and when standing still not in traffic, but this has never happened before. It also hasn't happened since, but I haven't had her ticking over stood still to avoid it happening again.
Oil is at the correct level and not too old and the coolant is full, also not massively old.
Has anyone had any similar issues, or can offer any advice?
Thanks in advance

Dave

possible your termostat is stuck and doesn't want to open.
You could check the temperature of the radiator...it should become warm when the temp has gone to normal working temp.

Fan not kicking in? Electrical?

I've got a 2.8 auto and although it ran lovely, it too suffered from running hot and the gauge was in the red when standing still in traffic. Coolant level was fine and it wasn't losing coolant either, but when I squeezed the hoses they felt very soft, as if they weren't full.

Anyway, drained some of the coolant and refilled it. Ran the car without the filler top on for a while. Topped it up properly and it's been fine ever since.

Now the needle sits in the centre of the gauge.

I check the coolant level every time I've taken her out since, but all is fine.

Can only think she had a blockage or something similar.

What exactly are you calling overheating? Is it boiling over? Just your readings going higher than normal? Is your overflow bottle working as it should, expanding when hot level as well as cold level dropping down to Marks on bottle? JIM

Thanks for the advice, I didn't let it get to the point of boiling over, as soon as I stopped moving I could watch the needle rising. It got to the top of the red so I switched the engine off and put the hot fans on full to suck some hot air out.
Bottle and contents appear to be acting normally, nothing different there.
I will have a look at the pipes to see if it's similar to @Jack Ratt

Dave

You may find a collapsing hose which would give those symptoms but give @Jack Ratt 's remedy a try. May just be a build up of air in the system!
The fact you say the overflow is working properly also let's out the rad cap for now! Good luck! Jim
