Did you notice any pressuring of the hoses? There will always be some with a hot engine but if it was combustion pressure they are rock hard.

That means the thermostat couldn't have been open, or at least not fully open. It does sound like an air lock.

Sounds like the Rad to me but best bet would be to go get a sniff test done by a garage to be on the safe side before you spend out on a rad :)

To be honest if you have combustion gasses coming up in the rad you can smell it, and see it.
