Thanks anyway Brian, much obliged for the help, I'll get there eventually, not essential that its done , just thought it would be nice to have all the functions working.

The loom plug is black on the facelifts. It's yellow on the pic of the probe that plugs into it. Are you sure you aren't mis interpreting the post?

Keep looking! Although without the probe I'm not sure what you're going to plug in! And if you had the probe it would be much clearer where it went :)

Not been able to find a yellow plug in the loom as yet. Should be getting a probe next week from either @Synclare or @spurs fan in a coupe. My Zed is a Oct 97 prefacelift.
Many thanks for your help, no doubt I'll get there eventually @mrscalex .:)

This is not from a Z3. But it's close to my recollection, notably the harness plug.

However this is a 3rd part part. The original plug was I think black.

On my car, it is in the top offside corner of the lower grill. This is the view from above.

Fair dos. My experience is facelift and although consistent with the photos above does not appear to be relevant for pre-facelift.

Even though I didn't get to the bottom of the issue, the help that came from so many people who took time out to post comments ant take photos on a Saturday was overwhelming. Many thanks to you all.

Hi all, success, I found the elusive yellow plug. Had another root around this afternoon, using for each part of the loom the process of elimination of what each cable went to. Each one seemed solid and fixed to something, I could see where the temp probe fitted, nothing there. Could see the cable and plug to the horn, and another cable between the horn and the car bodywork which was also solid, found it wasn't plugged into anything but trapped (see kink in cable second pic) and there it was, at last. Thank you all for your help, it was much appreciated.
Hopefully @Synclare or @spurs fan in a coupe will come through with a probe for a 97 M44 1.9, yes my Zed is 20 in October.

Curious now what the other plug I found on the drivers side (third pic).
