An obvious one but I can't find an answer. So... Why was there only one 'mark' of Z3 (and Z1) before it moved to the Z4 but then ongoing with Z4's? And no move to a Z5.

Technically the Z3 had a mk1 and mk2, called pre facelift and facelift models. 95-99 Ish then 99-02

The is the same with the Z4, 03-06 then Mk2 Facelift 06-09

Z designations, they did do some in between prototypes like the Z9. Years ago there was a rumoured Z2 but nothing appeared.

I get the pre and post face-lift, but the Z4 models change more than just rear wings and a few other cosmetics, and why the change to Z4 instead of sticking with Z3?

I guess they see the Z4 as a more successful model. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere the Z3 was a car that got BMW out of a financial pickle.

There is a book called BMW Z3 And Z4 The Complete Story that states that it was called Z4 because it was larger and they wanted to show that it was a way forward. They did not have a 4 series back in the day so it made sense.

Probably also due to the number of changes in the models. Z3 s essentially the same, Z4 E85 a very different car and G29 a big change again. But I've always wondered about car designations from many manufacturers.
