One million motorists with bad vision are on the road illegally

Yes I think we all dread the thought of losing our driving licence as we get older after a lifetime of being able to drive. I’m knocking on a bit now myself but am fortunate to still have pretty good eyesight. I’m a motorcyclist as well so it’s a matter of self preservation for me! When I start missing seeing something on the road that’s when I stop riding! I see some dreadful driving by car drivers and one wonders how they passed a driving test let alone a sight test!
I would hate my licence to be taken away but I like to think I would know when it’s time to stop for health reasons of any kind!

I was a motorcyclist, but I found It’s was other people’s eyesight that was the problem......3 accidents caused by drivers who ‘ didn’t see me’. Yet I was on a Honda ST1300 Pan European , which is not exactly a small bike!
The down side is that after the 3rd one, and on the ‘advice’ of the wife, I gave up biking, and sold everything.
The upside, I ended up buying a Z3 which otherwise probably wouldn’t have happened. :)

I had laser eye surgery about 10 years ago to prolong my working life doing vehicle inspections. I used to wear varifocal lens glasses but continually having to tilt my head back to use the lower part of the lens for closer work my neck and shoulders became a source of much pain and discomfort causing very poor sleep.
Laser eye surgery basically applies your glasses prescription to your own eyeball to focus your eyesight, it cannot improve your vision at all. So now I have to use reading glasses for close up work Inc. computer screens and the like.
Each year I have an eye examination due to having type 2 diabetes so my eye health is monitored regularly.
I will most likely have another laser surgery in the new year as I was told it would likely be required.
While I've been away I found a pair of reading glasses which are varied to three stages of focus so I bought a pair at $37 as I think they will be beneficial for my work. My late Dad suffered with Macular Degeneration and my dear old Mum always had very poor eyesight so consequently I don't expect to continue driving into my old age.
I'm making hay while the sun is shining.:)

Just in case you were wondering, Mac puts a pic of his wife in almost all of his drawings. She's in the extreme bottom left corner, head upside down.

:thankyou:

Started wearing bins several years ago, got headaches whilst on the PC all day. Reading glasses for PC work and bins for TV and sometimes driving when tired. Have a pair of varifocals but can't get used to wearing them all the time though.

She wasn't a looker was she ? =))

Yes I understand what you mean, I have a ST1300 and a Triumph Rocket 111 which is a monster of a bike! 2.3 litre! I’ve been riding since I was sixteen but ten years ago I trained with IAMS groups and to my surprise I learned a great deal particularly on observation! Yes other motorists don’t see you but you must see them and take avoiding action and I believe it makes you a better car driver as well, I also Love driving my Z3

Whilst on holiday in Kalkan, Turkey this September we went out on a couple of boat trips. The sea at that time of year is lovely and warm, so when the boat moored in a bay I was first out of my tee shirt and shorts, (swim trunks already on) and first to dive into the water. After swimming around for about 10 minutes I returned to the boat to get my mask, snorkel and flippers. I must have spent half an hour gazing down at fish, plants and rocks etc. before swimming back to the boat. When I got near to the boat I spied a pair of glasses lying on the sea bed in about 8 metres of water. When I got back on the boat I said to the others " I've just seen a pair of glasses lying on the sea bed, some poor fool must have dropped them off another boat without realising it." We then upped anchor and moved off to another bay to have some lunch. I dried myself off on the way to catch some rays and went to put on my glasses. I couldn't find them in my bag, Mrs Bonzo's bag or anywhere on the boat where we had been sitting............. Oh dear, oh dear, oh s**t! I asked if anyone had seen my glasses, but I knew what the answer would be!...... In my rush to be first in the sea I had dived in with my glasses ON! All the other folks on the boat quickly put 2+2 together and had a good laugh about the " Fool who had dived in with his glasses on." The boat captain, who is an old friend, took my arm and guided me to the toilet when the need arose, and when I came out one of the folks took my arm and led me back to my seat. I could see perfectly well to do all of this and they all knew it, but they were determined to milk the situation for all it was worth. The laughs were certainly on me for the rest of the day, but I deserved it and laughed with them! luckily I had packed a spare pair of glasses, which were back in the apartment. The boat Captain said he would return to the bay and see if he could spot my glasses and retrieve them, but when I checked with him the following evening, he said he hadn't seen them! However, the following evening he called me during our dinner to say he had found them. We then walked down to the harbour, after buying a gift for Deniz the captain, who had dived down, spotted them and picked them out of the sand. They were in good nick, but the view through them was a bit misty, due to the action of the sand during 2 days on the sea bed. All was not lost however, as I had an eye test on my return to the U.K. and needed a new prescription anyway!

Of course, Mrs. Bonzo made sure all of the people who asked if we had a good holiday got to hear about it!..:D
