With the engine cold check what the level is using the dipstick. If its low then top the oil up so it registers on the dipstick at the full mark on the dipstick. When was the last time you checked it and when was the last time it had an oil and filter change?
You should be checking it weekly if you are using the car a lot then you would have an idea if it was using oil.

If your car has a manual dipstick, in general cars have a range of 1 litre between the minimum and maximum marks. If, for example it is halfway between Min. and Max. it will need 1/2 (0.5) litre. Do NOT fill above Maximum. Is this a Z3 we're talking about and which engine size?

my newly acquired Z3 reversed on the drive last night and the yellow oil light came on after the ignition was switched off. its an M54 engine, research so far suggests it means low oil. My drive is on a slope so when I checked the dipstick it showed the level way below minimum. I'll roll it off the drive onto the flat road and recheck tonight
