After cleaning the cavities when I replaced the plugs about 6 weeks ago, I have found a small amount of oil in the no2 spark plug cavity. So it looks like the inner plug gasket is not sealing.
I have ordered the cover gasket set which should be here in the next day or so.

I will clean all the mating surfaces before fitting, but is it ok to use sealant on the four inner plug gaskets?

Don't know about the 4 cylinder engines, but when I changed the cam-cover gaskets on my 2.2 the old ones were brittle and falling to pieces. The new ones were proper soft and squidgy rubber, got the feeling they used the same stuff that they made the vanos seals out of. So there's probably no need for anything else, just the nice new gaskets. Seen too many instances of people using way too much silicone gasket stuff and it winds up getting into places you just don't want it going. And not over-tightened, too.

You should only need new seals and a thoroughly clean surface.

Tony.
