Just found out that the idiot that forgot to put a washer on the sump nut also overtightened it so much that he cracked the casting........evidence all over the garage floor !

Trying to find another sump at the moment so if anyone has one for a 1998 1.9 Z3. BWM part 11131247995, and you want to sell it, let me know.

I was quoted £364.00 plus vat from my local dealer........I did say I wanted it in cast aluminium not solid 24 carat gold!

Worst case, I will have to get the thing off and have it welded and remachined/ sleeved which apparently can be done.

After I had found the original problem of the missing washer, I was told cheer up it could be worse.........so I cheered up......and they were right it got worse

That reminds me of my first dip into doing my own mechanics when I changed the oil in my moped. I did the same thing and cracked the sump. Since then I now leave it to those how know better.
Sorry to hear your plight let' hope you can get it all sorted soon

That's a bummer Mazza but look on the bright side. It's an easy fix although it's going to cost a few bob. I'd get it off and weld it if it were mine. After all if you get a new one, you've still got to get the old one off, so why not just take it off and weld it. It's not as if anyone can see it

Just remember that a 6 inch ratchet or spanner is enough for sump plugs, you can always nip it up if it leaks

Loads of z3s being broken for a new sump

I know that, having done loads of oil changes on my Honda Silverwing, Deauville and ST1300. Unfortunately the garage professional, (or as I like to call him, a total moron), who did the last service before I bought the car, didn’t !

Still, at least knowing what the problem is, means that it can be sorted.

Pm me tomorrow @Mazza
Hi SFIAC,

As I do not do any social media stuff at all, I have no idea what ‘ Pm ‘ means or how to do it !

To be honest it takes me ages just to put a post on this site=))

Hi Geoff
Nothing yet. I have been on a couple of sites that have a network of breakers. Had one reply last Friday, but on phoning them to check it out, was told that the unit that they had was actually damaged !
There are some examples in the USA, but at stupid money, plus delivery plus import duty !,
Found a couple in Germany, and made an offer on one...just waiting for an answer.
It gets confusing as it would appear that the same one in used on a variety of models. Some sites have it as a Z3, others say 316 or 318
Providing it is the BMW 11131247995, which is the part reference shown on an exploded view parts list, it should be the right one

Bit of a pain but will be resolved :nailbiting:
