@gookah very neat looking job. They look very snug fit, no issues with gunk or trapped moisture next to the panels? Calipers look nice too BTW. :thumbsup:
 
I drilled a row of 10mm holes in the bottom of the last set i had on and it reduced the amount of debris that got stuck.
 
The Halford's ones cover the front lip of the sill, so preventing road crud from blasting it. They need to be trimmed up though! No need for rear mudflaps on a Z3, all plastic behind the wheel arches!

Yeah, the moulding on the edge on the Z3 ones could have done with being slightly smoother I think, but the recess running inline with the sill cover makes the OEM set look more like they belong...Decisions, decisions!
 
Can't get new OEM ones BMW stopped making them, or so I have been informed.
 
they all trap stuff, but even without mudflats the arch liner traps stuff too, so rock and a hard place really.

My car has OEM front mud flaps fitted. A project for the winter months is to strip out the front and rear wings plus sill covers so they can be replaced/ refurbished.
I took the drivers side mud flap off earlier today expecting to see very little damage. Behind the flap was packed with mud, the front sill edge rusty, the bottom missing and the side of the sill had a big blister of rust. I cleaned the worst of the rust off and gave it a coat of Aquasteel as a holding measure until I get to do the job properly.
Unsure about refitting the mud flaps after the refurb. I am thinking about using a coat of the stone protection paint on areas prone to damage and leaving them off.
I think this experience as certainly raised serious questions in my mind about the benefit of having mud flaps fitted.
 
Bit of a 'Rock and a hard place' thing! :eek:..I think they are good as they prevent road crud, chippings, stones etc. from blasting the front of the sills. when I replaced my sills I packed the area in front and behind of the the return lip with Waxoyl underseal.
As people of my age are prone to say..."It'll see me out."...:D
 
I can see there will be some crap getting behind those and causing problems with the body work.

After my initial investigation ( see post # 31)I decided to investigate further.
After taking the mud flap off ,it looked like this.

The clips which hold the flaps on had all but destroyed the flanges they grip onto on both sill and wing. At least the mud flap will have kept most of the muck out of the sill.
WRONG...... as I found when I pulled the wheel arch liner out.

The "accumulations" in the sill extended about 8" back from the wheel arch.
The front wing was not much better (some paint bubbles started showing last year).

After digging out the extent of rust in this area can be clearly seen.

The front of the inner sill doesn't look too bad but the outer requires some serious repairs (or replacing).

Again applied a coat of Aquasteel to tide it over until I get a chance to sort it properly later in the year.

Other side pretty much the same and same treatment given.

In total I estimate there was around 3kg of muck removed.

So getting back on topic. I think there was comment about mud flaps being functional. The design of the OEM flaps which has holes in it and clips that grip the panel flanges certain function to cause corrosion. As for keeping cr*p out they don't work. At least if you don't have them you can see the damage and fix it.
