Well bolts actually...... Spent this weekend TRYING to replace pads and discs on the rear of my M44 - a job I've done a few times before on other cars albeit not for a few years. What I haven't done before is replace pads and discs on a 19 year old car that hasn't always been looked after as well as I intend to going forward.

The stumbling block is a single rounded bolt on the RHS calliper bracket / housing and I can't get the bl**dy thing off. I've invested 2-3 hours and its cost me quite a considerable amount of knuckle skin on this single bolt before I've called it a day.

I have expert help (from my mate Phil the Petrolhead) on its way but I'm off the road for a couple of days until then with the left side on new pads / disc and the right on old pads and disc.

I only hope that the bolts (I'll replace all four of them while I'm at it as the others were a bit shabby too) are available with a decent lead time from BMW.

The first time I've had any real trouble with my beginners mechanical skills but I bet it won't be the last.......

Nothing worse than that ! You may need a bit of heat on it too if it very tight to help free it up.
If it round you will either have toget a smaller socket knocked on to the head or use something like an easy out which will grip whats left and get you out of your predicament.

Look back in @spurs fan in a coupe thread for the type he used a couple of weeks ago. Brilliant tool, I have some often use them on wheel security nuts/bolts.

Tony.

As above I have a set of spiral cut sockets for removing damaged bolts but like said already heat might be necessary if it's badly worn or rounded and siezed. Can't remember what size it is but if it's a13mm for example and it's damaged see if you can hammer on a 12 point 12mm socket

They're 16mm bolts IIRC.

Tony.

Thanks everyone - Tony's right it is a 16mm head and the spiral cut socket is what we're going to use - I'll let you know how we get on. My helpful mate with the tool is only just up the road but will take a couple of days to get the spare time.

I was pleasantly surprised at the Milton Keynes BMW dealership to find out that the bolts are only £5.40 a pair and on delivery for Wednesday - I've decided to replace all four while I'm at it........

Bit annoyed I'm off the road for such splendid driving weather. Will have to go for a walk tonight instead of a drive (if I can remember what a walk is - I think its what used to do for leisure before I got the zed)

Great your friend can come to the rescue! Rounded nuts have been around forever and technology has stepped up with some nice solutions fortunetly. Good luck, JIM
