Number Plate Cloning?

As this new excellent site is in its early days; I just wanted raise the question to see what the consensus of opinion is towards offering the public photos of every known members Z3 model, detailing age, engine size, colour etc etc.

This has been known to allow a number plate cloner a ready made directory of legal motors already on the road.

A mate of mine suffered the consequences of his number plate being cloned; and as a result recieved two speeding tickets + a police summons for driving off from a petrol station forecourt without paying All cleared up now #:-s

I have offered photos to the forum gallery of both 'masked' and displayed number plate. :-ss

As I say; I just wondered what the general thoughts are, so that we have some guidance for the future :-\

Personally I don't mind my plate being shown. I had the plates stolen from my van and they were used on a car that was involved with fuel theft from a Garage.

No doubt these people do use Forums such as this but I think there are lots of other ways too.

I always clone out number plates of my groups, but not for non-group members.

Alternatively for shows, we use Show Plates - helps advertise the group and saves me time Photoshopping.

I'm with Gazza on this one. So many other ways to get your details anyway.

I used to obscure the plates on every photo I posted, but then got bored doing it.

It's personal preference if you want to or not. If we end up posting anything with a plate on, and you want it changed just let us know!

My understanding is that somebody wishing to hide behind a stolen registration number could arguably get said number by walking the streets but that sourcing a spoof registration from 'upt' North if your 'darn Sarf' means there's less likelihood of you being seen by family and friends of the offended genuine owner.

Cloning a number from the internet is easy because if the thief has a Vauxhall Corsa to clone he would go on a Vauxhall Corsa website and find the same colour/model from a different part of the country. Otherwise he has to tour the streets looking - not practical.

Forums, AutoTrader and Pistonheads are prime targets for the cloner.

dont think it is anything to be concerned about as they would have to clone the car as well.
Not much point cloning my numberplate onto a silver mondeo, when its registered to a black Z4 which then goes through a petrol station without paying, even the police would probably realise it wasnt my car in the garage. or on a speed camera.
