my intelligent and beautiful 16 year old daughter is doing a charity tandem skydive tomorrow.

Even thought I have a passion for aviation, it has never extended to jumping out of aeroplanes.

When she first announced she wanted to get involved with this madness, organised by one of her favourite school teachers, I offered to give her the total target amount if she agreed not to do it, but she declined and said she would do it.

She is clearly having second thoughts now, but has sponsors.

So folks, what do I do?

option 1 - make fulfill her promise to do it
option 2 - pretend she is ill
option 3 - drive straight past the airfield tomorrow and head off into the sunset?

This is a difficult one......all I can say is my niece did a charity tandem sky dive last year and she was in two minds weather to go through with it before the event. But she did do it and absolutely loved it and wanted to do it all over again.

Steve

Are you joking?

Skydiving is one of the best things I've ever done. Exhilarating, emotional, amazing thing to do.

My line manager at work did this 3 weeks ago and said he would do it again instantly. My daughter in law has done the bungee jump thing in NZ, you would catch me doing that either, but let her do it, its safer than most things these days mate.

Tony.

oh I know statistically it is extremely safe, the brain knows that, but the heart just questions "why am I strapping my child to a complete stranger, and allowing them to plummet earthwards?"

I'd drive straight passed the airfield :p
Then phone up and a hour later and say you got stuck in traffic :)
If my child didn't want to do it .........:)
I couldn't put them through it ;)

What time is her skydive @smiffy :p
If she's does it I'm sure she will be really proud of herself afterwards ;)
Good luck :)
Let us know if she does it or not ;)
And I'm sure her sponsors will still give her the money :)

Agreed it must be an awful thing to think your kids are going to jump out a plane. But that said, whatever my son has thrown at us we have always said we will never surpress any decision he makes. So let her do it, she will thank you for it afterwards.

Never had Children but have always been envious of those who have.

Would not try to convince someone to do what they don't want to do but on the other hand
She has to be responsible for her decision to go ahead with it after you offered the Target amount.

So for me,
Pay the amount the sponsors have promised but make her pay the money back to you over a period of time.

That way she will understand her decision making has consequences should the decision be wrong and will take more time to think things through next time she has a big decision to make.

You sound a great Dad by the way......:thumbsup: Giving her the options you did and still willing now..

Very supportive mate.
Lessons learned.

Having worn a parachute many times when I was an active glider pilot, I still think of the bar banter "Why would you throw yourself out of a perfectly serviceable aircraft? It's for saving your life in an emergency ". Having said that my daughter did a jump some years back and really enjoyed it.

Her decision my friend. If you stop her and all her friends complete the jump you will not be best Dad:whistle:

Something I could never do....ever!!
Let your daughter stand by her decision to do it,I can understand the apprehension but like people have said on this site she will probably
Love it.
Someday soon your daughter will walk away with a (stranger) boyfriend anyway!

How did your daughter get on @smiffy :p

well, this morning my daughter awoke in good spirits and keen to go.
Sun shining so Roof down on the zed and off to ellough. ( @Shelly )
second plane load and off she went.
landing.webp

All done safe and sound:D.

As her boyfriend had arrived, I made my excuses and departed knowing she was safe and had transport home once all her friends had jumped.

Now that is where we would hope the story of today would end.....

I thought, I'll just nip over to the farm where we keep our aeroplane, (see avatar), say hello and check all is fine. The farmer and his wife, who I've known since I was four, were sorting out some electric fences prior to letting some horses and their donkeys out for the day. The young male donkey needs separating. I stopped to chat and help with the fence.
Farmers wife, Sue, goes to get the male donkey first.
Moments later, a helper runs round shouting "Sue has been hurt"
We run to the stable to find Sue on the ground and the other helper on the phone for an ambulance.

The donkey had butted Sue and knocked her to the ground busting her left femur in the process. Sue is now in hospital awaiting surgery.

Within an hour of the "high" of seeing my daughter land safely, I'm directing an ambulance down a farm track and then assisting paramedics care for a dear old friend.

I said I wasn't looking forward to today.
