Police cars went downhill when they started only buying those with tractor engines in, regardless of make.

. Problem for me Tony is that these new motors are only economical until they start to have problems, I had a VW Caddy with a 1.6 tdi and dsg 7 speed gearbox for work.
Gearbox stopped shifting at 46K repaired under warranty, DSG unit failed again out of warranty £1000 repair plus a new duel clutch pack and Duel mass flywheel whilst it was out ,shortly after the DPF failed nobody wanted to do the work as it’s bolted to the rear of the motor and an absolute pig to access so had it bypassed on the ecu, shortly after that the injectors started failing ( common problem apparently), a snip at £400 each! I gave up…….

When I said in the name of economy I simply meant MPG, because that is all the bean counters look at and that's why they selected diesel powered vehicles. Then , of course you can cut back on servicing which, apparently is the major cause of the problems with the BMW engines according to the manufactures. Which colour parliament told us diesel was good ?? We just got a payout for the VW car we bought. As regards the DSG box, we've had 3 and all have had no issues at all. The problems with modern diesel engines comes from trying to force as many miles as possible from each gallon of fuel with the least emission particulates produced as possible, and we passed the reasonable limits of that years ago. Yes the DPF cooler on those engines is an absolute b*****d to change, I would never volunteer to do another.

It does seem a shame, I used to drive coaches with an ex-copper who reminisced fondly about his E28 patrol car.....

As for modern diesels, my 2011 Mondeo had done 140k without issue, no problems with injectors, DPF, turbo or automatic gearbox which is a wet dual clutch type. Maybe I've just been lucky?🤞;)
When I was looking for a 1-series I did think about going back to petrol but so many of them at the age and price point I could afford were diesel I decided to buy on spec and condition rather than the fuel type and ended up with a 116d.

Everybody bought diesel for fuel economy, don't kid yourself otherwise. We have a diesel for the same reason we didn't buy them because they sound nice or smell nice. All these people retro fitting cars to electric motors I wonder why no one has bothered to build a diesel Z3.

Shirl's new 2 year old 420d is quite quick (and you can make them a lot quicker) but it still sounds like a diesel with the roof down (like the Eos) and stinks (like the Eos) but it does twice as many miles to a gallon as my Z4 does (like the Eos). One of Shirl's friends called a couple of years ago with her "new" car, a shiny black Merc. All was well till she left and put the roof down and started the stinking thing up. Shouldn't be allowed.;)
