Lee - You have a broad range of specialist skills that few have. They are especially needed not necessarily in just management but in many areas. You should consider project and engineering management in highly technical mechanical projects. Add in some commercial skills and you can do can easily do consultancy work. If you want to be a grease monkey I'm sure there are many process and production engineering opportunities.
Just go for it - go for lots of things. Just because you apply doesn't mean to say you have to accept if offered. Job applications are a two way street (although many employers don't see it that way).
Also, go for CEng status if you don't yet have it.

So I'm totally stumped what to do next with my career. I've always had a nuclear background weather it be clean or not so clean. I'm a mechanical engineer by trade and did an apprenticeship in this discipline I'm even registered with the IET so I've even got letters after my name. The project I'm working on now Is nearing its end and has actually ended for me in terms of its mechanical element.

So at the moment I'm part manager part technician and sit on the fence between the two, I know the money is good continuing down the management route but It's not me. I have many qualifications but just don't know what to do next. I live by the philosophy that if you enjoy your job you don't work a day in your life.

So the time has come to move onto something new and I'm stuck as what to do. Help!

So you'll remember the floods and the "B" area fire then. Don't panic. Happy times.
Ha! yeah I was there when it happened, Bit closer than I would have liked. I was in the area with the nasty's.

Very good points here @Redline, some of which I wish I had more knowledge pursuing. Because of my age I'm just about to get my IEng (10 years experience) CEng being degree level or suitable experience will takes some more time :)

never turn a hobby into a career, the chances are you'll end up loosing your hobby. keep your cars as your escapism.

avoid anything that involves dealing with the general public.

Sad thing is, hands on engineering is an undervalued occupation and decades of experience tends to pay the same as 5 years experience.

whilst a desk job may not be ideal, and often it is the home of the poor engineers that get "promoted out of trouble", it is however often where the cash is found, and real life, especially if a family is in the equation, needs cash!

stick to your specialism and as Redline says look at the project mangement/consultant route but this may well be on a shorter contract basis which needs reasonably secure finances to cover the gaps.

The best thing for you to do is find a job to your liking. No amount of money will help you if you go to work without enjoying it.

It's tough when you've got all these qualifications and experience, but you're still determining what direction to take next. I hear you on the money vs. passion thing - at the end of the day, you want to enjoy what you do. Have you ever considered a career in trucking? There's a ton of variety in the industry, and it can be lucrative. You've got your long-haul drivers, your local drivers, and your specialty drivers - endless options. If you're interested, check out https://newjobs4you.com/job-board/all-оptions/ for some job listings. It might be worth exploring! Good luck with your search, I hope you find something that sparks your passion.

Holy thread revival batman,

In the end I went way off in another direction . I went offshore working in the North Sea.

The experience I gained working out there was unreal.
