Hello Folks,

I'm not particularly great on the computer front, so I'm hoping this works. I've had Y reg Z3 3.0l for some while now. I tend to use it only during summer months. Topaz blue with sports interior. I will post a couple of photos when I have it out of the garage.

I don't know if anyone can help or point me in the direction of previous queries, but the cooling clutch fan keeps rotating as soon as the engine gets up to temperature. Consequently there is a loud whooshing sound on acceleration or even when blipping the throttle when stationary. It didn't used to be like this so I'm not sure what has happened. I'm sure you learned folks will know the answer.

Anyway, thanks for the welcome.

Brently

Welcome from Ireland! I’m not car mechanically minded - but I’m sure the experts will be along soon to assist.

Hi @Brently welcome from me near Lincoln. It sounds as though the viscous fan drive has failed giving full drive to the fan. You should be able to stop the fan with a rolled newspaper when the engine is at idle speed.

Tony.

Mine had the same whoosh and @t-tony and @Brian4 changed mine along with the rest of the cooling system parts. It's had a complete overhaul so belts, pulleys, thermostat, fan blades etc were all done. Good piece of mind on a older car.
Hello from Mansfield by the way!

Thanks everyone for the welcome. I have uploaded a picture of the Z but I'm not sure what will happen to it!
No doubt I will get the hang of this sooner or later!

Thanks for the tips too about the fan, I will get a price for a full overhaul of the cooling system.

I live in St. Neots in Cambridgeshire, just off the A1.

Hi and welcome from me in Scotland :welcome:.
Agree with Tony sounds like the viscous fan unit locked up
If engine not running you should be able to spin the fan by hand if it wont turn ( eg trying to turn the belt as well ) then definitely needs a new one .
But all your symptoms point towards it .

Hi and welcome from Warwickshire.

Every day is a school day here!
I didn't know @t-tony had installed a letter box on his Zed 3

The viscous coupling get regular mentions as a common fault.

Hello and :welcome: from Surrey, very nice looking car. I agree that it sounds like the viscous coupling, not an uncommon problem but very easy to change. It sounds as though the car is suffering from lack of use. :)
