Good afternoon all, I am looking to purchase my first Z3 at the weekend. Being an Audi man normally I don't know a great deal about the Z3 other than it looks great! I've got my eye on this 2.2 auto with FSH and 95k on the clock. I know the 6 cylinder is generally bullet proof and mechanically I'm pretty accomplished however, are there any specific "gotchas" to be aware of beforehand. Secondly apart from the obvious power difference is a 2.2 or a 3.0 the better car?

Many thanks in advance,

Simin

:welcome: to the forum from West Cumbria. Nice one. The mechanical boffins will be along soon to advise on what's what. As for the best, can of worms  it's obviously the 2.8 =))

Welcome and enjoy your Zed, infinite smiles per gallon. :coolsteer)

Hi Simon,

Very little between the 2.2 and the 3.0 other than the 60ish bhp. I would personally by on condition first, look for a decent service history/record. Most Z3's are getting to that age where most things will need doing. The youngest are over 13 years old, up to over 20 years for the early ones.

Just check for all the things you would check for on a 15-20 year old car. All suspension components, bushes, shocks and so on. Engine cooling rubber hoses, and the air intake hoses are prone to perishing at this age.

Worth checking for water inside the car as there are several known weak points other than the hood. The foam under the carpets in the cabin can hold litres of water without feeling damp to the touch. Check the battery box for water from leaks in the 3rd brake light and aerial grommet.

If you have a code reader take it along and see if there is anything stored. CAM sensors are quite common to go on the 6 pots. Obviously should be no lights on the dash - but be wary that a previous owner may have removed or covered them to hide a fault (sadly very common on the Z3). The engine should idle smoothly and pull consistently throughout the rev range.

There aren't that many jobs which can't be carried out by the average mechanic, worst problem will be rusty nuts and bolts. On the subject of rust! Generally confined to the outer skin panels, and is incredibly rare in the chassis itself. Finding decent second hand door sills is getting difficult, but all the panels are still available from BMW.

The majority of the parts on the Z3 are shared with other BMW models such as the E30 & E36 3 series, so are easily sourced and not overly expensive. GSF and Eurocarparts all stock almost all of the common stuff. We even have a couple of tame Z3 breakers on here, so really no shortage of parts. Sites like realoem.com will let you find all the part numbers you need and allow you to see which other models use the same part.

The biggest problem you will have is containing the silly grin on your face!

That car looks nice Simon, but if you're not in a tearing hurry try to get a test drive in either engine size which takes your fancy. Where are you located?, someone may be local enough to offer you a drive or even just a ride in their pride and joy to help you make your decision. Welcome to the forum from me near Lincoln, not a Z3 owner any longer.

Tony.

Hi and welcome from Surrey, apart from the power difference there is nothing to choose between the 2.2 and 3.0. The 2.2 still has adequate performance. I have had my 3.0 for 8 years now and 90,000 miles with only a rear spring and a cam sensor to change apart from normal service items. Gazza's write up just about covers it. :welcome:

Thank you Gaz, the do seem relatively easy to work on (which is what I'm after) I've my eye on the silver one pictured but I have been offered a Blue 2.8 with 126k but it is nearly 200 miles away - I didn't realise the power difference was so large!

I'm looking forward to either sitting in my garage

Thank you folks for a very warm welcome, I can see I'm going to enjoy both the car and being part of the forum!!
I'm not in a massive hurry but when it comes to cars I go very much with my gut instinct and the silver beauty just popped out at me as it sat so well and looks "right" I've spoken to the trader who is selling it and he sounds straight up and he had it in part ex from an old boy who spared no expense when it came to ththe car. It was also reduced by 1k as he freely admitted to needing the space on his drive and that this is the wrong time of year to get good money for it. I have been offered a 2.8 at £2400 but it has 126 (nothing I know) but it is over 3hrs away and the guy seems relatively keen to move it on but to be fair it seems a very genuine car! at £2400 it's also considerably over my initial budget for a Z3 so where do you stop? Before you know it you are at 3k.
I have checked myself slightly as the car is going to be for the summer and whilst I love my powerful cars, I'm buying it for the experience and the engine note more than anything else. Again coupled with the experience, an auto will make for very easy cruising - I love my 330d and its auto box and the point and shoot driving style. Whilst the 1.9's are cheaper and more plentiful I know I'd wish I'd gone for the 6 pot so I think the 2.2 is a good compromise and I'm sure it will be pokey enough.

Nice one, to be honest I think it matters not what you've got, be it the 1.8 to the mighty 3.2 ///M. If it's roof down driving in a cracking car that will stand the test of time and beyond, this is the car IMHO. Enjoy.

Welcome from Canada! I have a 97 1.9 z3 and to be honest it's plenty fast!! I'm used to driving fast high HP cars over here and just love the response of the little engine and red line it constantly. Top down with my granddaughter beside me size doesn't matter! And pricewise you can't find a better car for the money! JMO. JIM
